Alexandra Eala, a 19-year-old girl from the Philippines, is making waves at the Miami Open 2025. With a wildcard and world ranking of 140, she defeated Iga Swiatek (world number 2) in the quarterfinals on the morning of March 27, after overcoming Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys.
The young Filipino had the most impressive performance of his historic journey at the Miami Open, defeating No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek 6-2, 7-5 to reach the semi-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time in his career.
In which, Eala left a big impression when she won the second set 7-5 from a 2-4 deficit.
She became the first Filipino to reach the semifinals at the WTA 1000 level and will join the world's top 100 next week and is the third case in history to reach the Miami Open semifinals from a wildcard.
The fourth-round win over Paula Badosa came via a retirement, but Eala's left-handed talent and decisiveness were key.
Swiatek praised her opponent: "The way she holds the racket with her left hand is very uncomfortable, it makes me tired"
Now, Eala will inspire Philippine tennis with this achievement. From an unknown, she entered the WTA 1000 semifinals, facing Pegula (ranked 4th) at 7:30 tomorrow morning, March 28.
Eala's success will bring further affirmation and position to Nadal Academy.
