This is the first time in 20 years that Korea has hosted the APEC Summit since the successful APEC Summit held in Busan in 2005, so Gyeongju city is actively preparing for this event.
As the host city of the APEC Summit to be held in Korea in November 2025, Gyeongju is making preparations so that the event's organizing committee can operate immediately after the official announcement, according to a statement from a leader of North Gyeongsang Province.
Accordingly, the city will establish a specialized organization to prepare for APEC and develop implementation plans for each sector for immediate implementation. The top priority is housing renovation projects and environmental protection projects. Gyeongju residents have also expressed their willingness to actively participate in preparations for the successful events, with banners commemorating the APEC Summit being erected in Gyeongju and other areas of North Gyeongsang Province from June 21.
Gyeongju City has been running for the 2025 APEC Summit since July 2021, along with Seoul, Jeju, and Busan, but Busan has announced its withdrawal. Gyeongju has the advantage of being a UNESCO World Heritage City and an optimal model for realizing inclusive growth and balanced development, which are the values that APEC advocates.
Gyeongju City is expected to become a world-class tourist city when it hosts APEC 2025. According to the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Institute, the economic spillover effect on Gyeongju related to the APEC Summit is estimated to be 972 billion won (about 700 million USD) in boosting production, while nearly 8,000 jobs will be added.
