Hundreds of questions from Long An students interested in many fields, professions and job opportunities after graduating from university
On March 8, at Hau Nghia High School (Duc Hoa district, Long An province), Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper organized the 24th "Bringing school to candidates" program - 2025 with the participation of more than 1,600 high school students and 200 teachers.
Many concerns
Although the program did not start until 8:00 a.m., hundreds of students from 12 high schools were already present at the counseling location by 6:30 a.m. Many students said they were very confused when choosing a major because they liked many majors but had not yet decided. They wanted the program to give them detailed advice to help them orient their future.

The program was also attended by 200 teachers from many high schools in the area. Ms. Tran Thi My Hanh, a literature teacher at Hau Nghia High School, said she is having difficulty in providing career counseling to students. "My students ask a lot about career counseling, fearing that they will not be able to find a job after graduating from college or university. Many families have difficult circumstances and want to work early... As a homeroom teacher, I also want to collect more information as well as counseling methods to help students orient their careers properly" - Ms. Hanh shared. Similarly, Mr. Le Trong Duc, a young teacher who is in charge of a 12th grade class, also has difficulty in providing career counseling to students. "This is the first year that students studying the 2018 General Education Program "go to battle" for the university entrance exam. Not only are the students worried, but the teachers themselves are also very stressed" - Mr. Duc said.
Candidates enthusiastically asked questions to the advisory board
At the program, Associate Professor, Dr. Do Tat Thien - career guidance expert, Head of the Psychology Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education - said that some studies show that about 10% - 20% of students drop out of university in their first year, 60% of students in their fourth year feel that they are not suitable and want to stop studying. In addition, 18% of students said that they chose their major based on their parents' wishes. These numbers show that choosing the right career is very important; if you go in the wrong direction, this journey will take a lot of time, money and effort.
"Choosing a career based on passion is not enough, you also need to consider your own abilities. The smartest choice is to balance between abilities and passion. In addition, you also need to pay attention to health conditions, family finances, geographical location, whether it is suitable or not" - Associate Professor Thien advised.
Sharing the same opinion, MSc. Hoang Thuy Nga, Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), said that whether or not graduates can find a job depends on their own abilities and passion for the job. Choosing to study a "hot" major does not necessarily mean they can find a job.

Answering students' concerns about whether to study Chinese or pursue tourism to satisfy their passion, Master Nguyen Hoang Quan, Director of Admissions at Van Hien University, noted: Before choosing a major, students need to understand what they want and learn carefully about that profession. With tourism, it is not necessarily about satisfying their passion but understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the industry and the requirements of that profession. Choosing tourism must be determined as choosing a career, not traveling...
