Hanoi Director of Education and Training says 'no shortage of places to study' despite parents queuing up all night

On the afternoon of July 5, at the question-and-answer session of the Hanoi People's Council, Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, received a question related to the planning of the school network in the capital city in the context of many parents and students having to line up to submit application documents from early morning.

Responding, Mr. Tran The Cuong said that today, many press agencies reported the situation of parents lining up from early morning to secure a place in grade 10 for students at some private schools. However, when the school announced the results, many students were not admitted, which made some parents upset.

Explaining why parents line up from early morning to “get a place” in school, Mr. Cuong said: “Because some schools have a reputation for training, parents trust them and send their children to school at all costs. Therefore, they line up from early morning with the hope that their children will get a place in school,” Mr. Cuong said, and affirmed that in Hanoi “there is no shortage of places to study.”

To overcome the above situation, the Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that in the coming time, the city will recruit students online, which will help reduce the hardship of parents. In addition, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has also worked with the Department of Planning and Architecture, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment as well as districts to discuss plans to withdraw suspended projects to reserve land for the construction of public schools.

Regarding the school network, Mr. Cuong said that currently, Hanoi has 2,845 schools in 30 districts, towns and cities. According to the hierarchy, the number of public schools is 2,254 (accounting for 79%), the rest are private schools. Notably, the number of schools in the city will increase gradually each year. "Specifically, each year there will be an increase of 30 - 35 new schools to have enough space for children to study in the current period," Mr. Cuong added.

As Thanh Nien reported, in recent days, the situation of parents having to queue up all night to enroll their children in grade 10 at some private schools in Hanoi has reappeared. Many cases had enough or more than the standard score but because they were "slow", they had to leave with regret and frustration.
