Art toys have recently created a fever among Vietnamese youth. Small teddy bears with many eye-catching shapes and colors are so sought after that many people are willing to line up overnight to own them.

Among them, the item named Labubu has received the most attention. For celebrities, Labubu has now become an indispensable accessory to add more beauty to their branded bags.

What is Labubu?

Labubu is a recognizable goblin character with several notable features such as pointed ears, jagged teeth protruding from his mouth, and a mischievous smile. Labubu is part of "The Monsters" - a group of characters inspired by Norse fairy tales. The character is currently sold by Pop Mart as a small teddy bear.

The character Labubu and the Mysterious World was created by artist Kasing Lung (born 1972, from Hong Kong, China) in 2015. He and his family moved to the Netherlands when he was a child. As he grew older, he became interested in elves in the Nordic folklore tradition. This influences Kasing Lung's work to this day.

In Kasing Lung's story, Labubu is a kind-hearted character who always wants to help, but accidentally does bad things. In the original, Labubu is female. The unique characters and vivid worlds he created became popular with art lovers, attracting the attention of young people. In 2019, Kasing Lung signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Pop Mart in the art toy category, according to the Bangkok Post .

To date, 10 Labubu collections have been launched. One of the most popular collections is the "Exciting Macaron", which comes in 7 flavors (Lychee Berry, Green Grape, Soymilk, Sea Salt Coconut, Sesame Bean, Toffee and Chestnut Cocoa).

Items for celebrities to "compete"

The price of a Labubu doll is listed on the company's website at nearly 400,000 VND. However, these items quickly sold out. This has forced collectors to hunt for them on the resale market at a much higher value.

The "Exciting Macaron" collection became more popular after Lisa - a member of the group Blackpink - posted a photo on her personal page. According to Nationthailand , this action caused the price of Labubu dolls to skyrocket by 400%.

Lisa even bought Labubu as a gift for Rosé. The Blackpink main vocalist was delighted to receive this item and attached it to her bag during a recent airport visit.

The fact that female Kpop idols (Korean pop music) show their love for the toy has made it a hot item for young people. Because fans always want to have a "cheap moment" (a term for sharing a toy) with their idols.

In Vietnam, many famous people such as Miss Tieu Vy, Do Thi Ha, Ky Duyen, supermodel Thanh Hang, and singer Van Mai Huong have also caught up with the Labubu trend. They see it as an accessory to help enhance their designer bags worth tens of millions of dong.

Notably, the "comparison" of Labubu between the singer sisters Phuong Linh - Phuong Ly made fans laugh. Because Phuong Linh recently often shares videos of "unboxing" Labubu and accompanied by humorous and joking words for Phuong Ly. She always wants to show that she has a more unique version of Labubu than her sister.

Covered on all social networking sites in Vietnam, Labubu's fever is increasing. According to a survey by Dan Tri reporters, Labubu's resale price is currently many times higher than on reputable brand websites. Meanwhile, many small stores cannot ignore the trend, leading to "copycat" products, selling them at cheap prices.

Match the fashion trend

In addition to celebrity influence, the company’s sales strategy is also a part of what makes Labubu a desirable item for young people. Instead of mass-producing, the company only puts this toy on the shelves in small quantities.

They even create excitement by selling in the form of blind boxes. If customers want to have a satisfactory Labubu item, they can buy it many times and accept the "luck" factor.

More than anything, the "craving" for Labubu also stems from the need for fashionistas to keep up with trends. Since the beginning of this year, the trend of attaching teddy bears and tying bows to bags has become a hot topic on many forums. Marie Claire magazine recently reported that searches for "bag keychains" have skyrocketed 240% on Pinterest since last year and are now at a decade high on Google.

At Miu Miu’s Spring 2024 collection presentation, models appeared with small accessories. Meanwhile, Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring 2025 saw the rise of the teddy bear trend on handbags based on the outfits of showgoers.

With the rise of the quirky bag charm trend, Labubu is now the ideal choice for many young people to start decorating their fashion items. Moreover, choosing the right Labubu also helps them express their own personality.
