Ms. Bich said that her daughter is in 5th grade. Seeing information about the "rabbit-toothed monster" that is causing a stir online, she was fascinated and wanted to have one. Therefore, she was determined to spend a whole day taking her daughter to "hunt" for the first Labubu.
Labubu is an art toy designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung in 2015. The toy was inspired by the sharp-toothed monster of Norse mythology. For about two months now, this toy has been causing a stir online, leading to a "sold out" situation everywhere.
At the shopping mall in District 7, some items will be back on the shelves from August 15 at their original prices. Therefore, many young people showed up early to buy Labubu.
According to the reporter's investigation, there were nearly 500 people in Ho Chi Minh City standing in line since dawn.
Some people took a nap before opening time.
"On the internet, I saw people selling it at many different prices: 700,000 VND, 900,000 VND, and even more than 1 million VND. When I came here to buy it directly, the price was only 380,000 VND," shared Phuong Anh (Bich's daughter). Sitting next to her, Bich said that from yesterday until now, the taxi fare for 4-5 trips is equal to the cost of buying Labubu outside. Because she loves her daughter, she had to indulge her.
Bich and her mother were given a number to buy goods by the security guard, and waited until the store opened at 9am. Each number could only buy two random items. Bich was still afraid that she would come later, even though she had a number in hand, she would still not be able to buy anything. The day before, many people said they had come since 2am but still left empty-handed.
Meanwhile, the first 20 people to arrive were able to buy whatever they wanted without fear of being sold out. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Huong (30 years old, from Binh Tan district) felt lucky to be in this group. To do so, she and her nephew had spread out a tarp to sleep at the shopping mall since 6pm yesterday.
"We were only at the bottom of the top 20. Many people had been queuing since 3-4pm the day before," she said.
Ms. Tuyet Huong's family was lucky to be in the "red box". This box is for the 20 earliest arrivals, who can freely buy Labubu to their liking without worrying about running out of stock.
According to her, the waiting time was very tiring. She bought food, fans, plastic tarps... in advance to "camp" right at the shopping center. If she needed to go to the toilet, she asked someone to hold a seat for her so she could stop by nearby convenience stores. She couldn't sleep all night because of the noise and nausea. She walked around to relax, chatted with people waiting around... Sometimes, she even sat down and played cards to avoid boredom.
Asked why she loves Labubu, Ms. Huong said her younger brother is extremely fond of this "bunny-toothed monster". She also feels that Labubu is cute and is popular, so she wants to "follow the trend". "If you have one, you will want to buy another one", she said.
Meanwhile, Le Thi Yen Nhi (26 years old, Hoc Mon district) and 3 family members took turns looking for food, going to the toilet... everywhere. They hoped to "hunt" 5-6 animals to bring home so that it would not be a waste of time queuing up from the night before.
"There are a lot of fake goods nowadays, not to mention the price of this item has been greatly increased. So my family came here hoping to buy a decent amount," she said.
Yen Nhi said the atmosphere in front of the mall from night to early morning today was very bustling. Although tired, everyone was very excited. Nhi's younger brother, who is only in 4th grade, also joined in this shopping battle because he is so crazy about Labubu.
Mai Duy Minh Khang (29 years old, from Da Lat) said he and his wife took a bus here early but could not sleep because the trucks passing by were too noisy.
"My husband and I have to live in a tent because we don't have a place to live. But we have to accept it because buying here is much cheaper than buying through an intermediary. I already have 8 at home and a few that haven't been "unboxed". This time we hope to hunt for Labubu ver 2 with a pretty pastel color or Labubu chrysanthemum. No matter how hard it is, I will endure it to satisfy my passion," he said.
