The year of At Ty starts from January 29 to February 16, 2026.

Superstitious or not, many parents in China are not too keen on the Year of the Snake to have children. Instead, the most popular year is the Year of the Dragon, according to the South China Morning Post .

Story of two consecutive years

The reason is that people born in the year of the Dragon are said to possess extraordinary abilities, inheriting the luck and royalty of legendary dragons.

As a result, the number of births in China in the Year of the Dragon is higher than in all other years of the 12 zodiac animals.

On the contrary, many couples in this country do not prefer to have children in the year of the Snake because they think this is an unlucky year, and if it is a girl, she may have trouble in love.

According to China's National Bureau of Statistics, the number of births in the country fell by 1.97 million in the most recent Year of the Snake, 2013, compared with the Year of the Dragon, 2012. In Hong Kong, the number of births in 2013 was nearly 30,000 lower than the previous year, according to official figures from the special administrative region.

Many users of Chinese social networks like Weibo share opinions such as that boys born in the year of the Snake are often called "debt collectors", and girls have a difficult love life.

Some people even believe that the year of the Snake not only does not bring luck but instead pushes the family into difficulty, specifically in terms of finances.

Why worry about the year of the Snake?

In Chinese culture, snakes are often associated with danger. In many of the country's legends and folk tales, snakes are seen as villains.

That directly affects people's views on the Year of the Snake, especially in terms of having children because everyone wants their children to be born under a lucky zodiac sign.

"Although I also want to have a baby as soon as possible, I still want to avoid giving birth in the Year of the Snake," a user commented on Weibo, according to the South China Morning Post .

"The year of the Snake does not sound as noble as the year of the Dragon and does not symbolize luck like the year of the Horse. I am afraid that my child (if born in the year of the Snake) will not be lucky," according to this person.

However, not everyone agrees with this opinion. A user of Xiaohongshu, an Instagram-like platform in mainland China, said that the snake is a symbol of intelligence and wisdom. People born in the year of the Snake are often wise, thoughtful and ambitious.

In fact, many people born in the year of the Snake have achieved success far beyond that of ordinary people. Among the bright faces born in the year of the Snake are American superstar Taylor Swift (born in 1989), and even the General Secretary and President of China, Xi Jinping (born in 1953), is also a famous person born in the year of the Snake.

In addition, thanks to the low birth rate in the year of the Snake that many people criticize, some people believe that children born in this year, specifically 2025, face less competition from their peers, and have easier access to educational resources.

It is also important to note that a child's future depends on the education of their parents, family and the child's own efforts when growing up, rather than mainly looking at the zodiac sign or year of birth to decide their destiny.
