Today, February 26, in Hanoi, the opening ceremony of the Northern region qualifying round, the 2nd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024 THACO Cup took place. This is a tournament assigned by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association to Thanh Nien Newspaper in coordination with the Vietnam Football Federation to organize annually during the period from the anniversary of the Vietnamese Students' Traditional Day on January 9 to the celebration of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union's founding day on March 26 and Vietnam Sports Day on March 27. This tournament has been officially included in the annual national competition system of the Vietnam Football Federation and the Vietnam Student Sports Tournament.
The Northern Regional Qualifiers of the 2nd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024 THACO Cup, taking place from February 26 to March 5, with the participation of the following teams: Thuy Loi University (host), Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports, Phuong Dong University (group A), National Economics University, Hanoi University, Dai Nam University (group B), Hanoi University of Construction, Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports, Phenikaa University (group C).
The teams compete in a round-robin to select the 3 first-place teams and the 1 second-place team with the best results from the 3 groups, and compete in a play-off to compete for 2 spots to attend the final round taking place from March 16 to 31 at Ton Duc Thang University's football field (HCMC).
The 2nd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024 THACO Cup has 64 universities, colleges and academies nationwide registered to participate, an increase of 1.5 times compared to the 1st tournament. Compared to the 1st tournament, there are some new points in the tournament regulations such as: Regulations on competition registration allow teams to register up to 7 officials (with the positions of team leader, head coach, assistant coach, professional staff, media staff, doctor, caregiver). Of which, there are 3 mandatory positions to register including team leader, head coach and doctor or caregiver. These are requirements approaching the standards of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for clubs or national teams in international competitions. In addition, the Regulations of the 2nd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024 THACO Cup also provide new regulations on the eligibility of players to participate in the tournament, the age of participating students, etc.
Another new feature of the 2024 tournament is the prize structure. In addition to the total prize of about 700 million VND, the organizing committee will add many additional prizes to create more highly competitive playgrounds.
In the opening match of the Northern region qualifying round of the 2nd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024, the Thuy Loi University team won 7-0 against the Phuong Dong University team to temporarily lead Group A.
The qualifying round of the 2nd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024 THACO Cup has 64 teams divided into 6 regions competing from January 6 to March 9, including Hanoi (February 26 - March 7 at the University of Water Resources Stadium), Central Coast (February 28 - March 7 at the Hue City Center for Culture, Sports and Sports), South Central and Central Highlands (March 1 - March 7 at Nha Trang University Stadium), Southeast (January 12 - January 18 at Bau Thanh Stadium, Ba Ria - Vung Tau), Southwest (March 3 - March 9 at Can Tho Stadium) and Ho Chi Minh City (January 6 - January 25 at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium) to select 11 teams with the host team Ton Duc Thang University to compete in the final round from March 16 - March 31 in the same format as the current U19 and U21 tournaments.
Up to this point, 6 teams have been identified to participate in the final round of the 2nd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024 THACO Cup, including: Ton Duc Thang University (host), Van Lang University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Physical Education and Sports, Van Hien University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry (Ho Chi Minh City area); Dong Nai University of Technology (Southeast region).
