Airlines have suddenly increased ticket prices on many domestic and international routes during the April 30 and May 1 holidays, with new prices 2-3 times higher than normal days. Passengers are "stunned" and are recalculating their travel plans during this holiday.

A survey of ticket prices on domestic airlines' websites on March 18 for flights during the April 30 and May 1 holidays shows that ticket prices have started to "heat up".
For example, on Vietnam Airlines' Hanoi - Da Nang route, the price of an economy class ticket on weekdays ranges from 1.8 - 2 million VND/ticket, but on holidays the price jumps to 2.5 million VND/ticket, an increase of about 25 - 38%.
The Hanoi - Phu Quoc route operated by Vietjet even recorded a holiday price that was more than twice as high as normal days. Meanwhile, Bamboo Airways listed the ticket price for the Hanoi - Nha Trang route at up to 3.7 million VND/ticket during the holiday, an increase of nearly 2.5 times compared to the normal price.
Similarly, the Ho Chi Minh City - Phu Quoc route is also not out of the price increase trend. If you choose to fly on April 30 and return on May 4, the lowest round-trip ticket price from airlines such as Vietjet, Bamboo Airways and Vietnam Airlines ranges from 3.6 - 4 million VND, double the normal price of about 1.8 - 2 million VND/ticket.
Not only tourist destinations, many other flights during the holiday also increased in price by about 30%, causing many difficulties for people planning to return to their hometown or travel far away.
Ms. My Chi, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, calculated that during the 5-day holiday, she would return to her hometown in Da Nang with her family. However, the lowest round-trip ticket price for the Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang route is up to 1.7 million VND/person, while it is around 800,000 - 1.2 million VND on weekdays. Her family of 4 is traveling by plane, and Ms. Chi calculated that the round-trip ticket price is an amount that exceeds her monthly income.
On international routes, ticket prices have also increased sharply. The Hanoi - Bangkok (Thailand) route is an example. For example, on weekdays, the economy class ticket prices of domestic airlines Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet range from 2.2 to 3 million VND/ticket, while international airlines ThaiAirways and AirAsia... range from 1.5 to 3.8 million VND/ticket. During holidays, the prices increase to 3.1 to 5.1 million VND/ticket for domestic airlines and 2.8 to 5 million VND/ticket for international airlines.
Travel companies and airline ticket agents said the demand for individual tickets is increasing. According to Ms. Tran Thi Bao Thu, marketing and communications director of Vietluxtour Travel Company, this year's holiday is favorable for short trips of 3-4 days, or longer trips of 5-6 days if combined with additional days off. "We have prepared group tickets, individual tickets and tour packages to serve families as well as groups," Ms. Thu said.
Talking to us, airlines said that market share is falling to Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet dominates the domestic market. The remaining four airlines such as Vietravel Airlines, Pacific Airlines, Vasco, Bamboo Airways currently have few aircraft, some airlines only have 1 aircraft.
Therefore, the possibility of adding more aircraft to compete on ticket prices will be very difficult. In addition, airlines are taking advantage of peak times to increase revenue when there are many passengers, as long as they do not exceed the ceiling price according to regulations.
