On December 19, the leaders of Hue Central Hospital said that doctors and nurses had just held a discharge ceremony for two allogeneic bone marrow transplants for children with congenital hemolytic anemia, HAD (38 months old, from Quang Tri) and D.MAT (10 years old, from Da Nang City).
Accordingly, the HAD patient was diagnosed with alpha-thalassemia about a year ago and had to be hospitalized for monthly blood transfusions. After testing, the child was confirmed to be a complete match with his 8-year-old brother, so he received a bone marrow transplant on November 12. After the transplant, platelets recovered on the 10th day and granulocytes recovered on the 19th day.

Similarly, D.MAT was diagnosed with Alpha-Thalassemia at 20 days old and had to be hospitalized for monthly blood transfusions. After testing, the baby was also a perfect match for his 15-year-old brother and underwent an allogeneic bone marrow transplant on November 27. The transplant was successful, although the baby had mild neutropenia but recovered quickly. Platelets recovered on day 21 and granulocytes recovered on day 19.
In early October 2024, Hue Central Hospital also performed an allogeneic bone marrow transplant to save the lives of two children, Tran Viet Th. (42 months old) and Pham Le HV (8 years old), both residing in Da Nang City. These were the first two allogeneic bone marrow transplants performed in the Central region.
According to the leader of Hue Central Hospital, thalassemia is a genetic disease that causes microcytic anemia, seriously affecting the physical and mental development of children. In severe cases, children must rely on regular blood transfusions, causing iron overload in the body, causing iron accumulation in the body's organs, leading to many difficulties in life.

The successful treatment of allogeneic bone marrow transplants in patients with congenital hemolytic anemia and alpha-thalassemia is a major step forward in the application of allogeneic stem cell transplantation techniques.
This technique marks an important success in the treatment of this disease, opening up many new opportunities for children with congenital hemolytic disease. Children no longer have to depend on regular blood transfusions or daily iron excretion, and develop normally like other healthy children.
On this occasion, Hue Central Hospital also successfully performed the 40th autologous bone marrow transplant. That was NPQM (4.5 years old, from Tien Giang) with high-risk neuroblastoma.
With autologous stem cell transplantation technique to help prolong the life of children with high-risk neuroblastoma, Hue Central Hospital is the only hospital in the country with full multimodality in treating neuroblastoma including chemotherapy, surgery, bone marrow transplantation and radiotherapy.
