According to AFP news agency, the EC hopes to open all negotiation chapters with these two countries by 2025.
Speaking to reporters in Brussels, Belgium, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stressed that the bloc will support Ukraine in implementing important reforms to meet the criteria to become a full member.
As for Georgia, another country trying to join the EU, negotiations have stalled due to concerns about the domestic political situation. The EC has asked Georgia to implement a number of reforms in order to resume negotiations.
In addition to Ukraine and Georgia, European Commissioner for EU Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi noted positive progress from a number of other candidates, especially Montenegro, in their accession negotiations.
This raises hopes for further EU enlargement, not only in Eastern Europe but also in other regions, to give new impetus to the union in the face of increasing international competition and geopolitical volatility.
Despite many challenges, the EU is showing its determination to expand the union while setting strict standards to ensure political stability and sustainable development for the entire region.
Previously, in June 2022, the EU officially launched accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova to show strong support for these two countries.
The negotiation process begins with a phase of examining the legal regulations of Ukraine and Moldova to assess their compatibility with EU legal standards.
According to the EC's assessment, this review phase - also known as "screening" - is proceeding smoothly and has not encountered any significant obstacles. The EC expects to move to the detailed negotiation phase, opening 35 negotiation chapters from the field of rule of law to environmental protection by 2025.
However, the road ahead is still challenging. To become EU members, Ukraine and Moldova need to carry out many far-reaching reforms, especially in the areas of fighting corruption and improving the judicial system.
