According to Majin Bu, the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a new telephoto lens with a 48MP sensor, higher than the 12MP sensor on the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.

Although this information has been revealed by several other sources, Bu went further, stating that the new lens will offer 3.5x optical zoom (equivalent to 85mm) instead of the current 5x zoom (equivalent to 120mm).
This focal length is generally more suitable for portrait and everyday photography, as it allows iPhone users to frame shots without having to move too far away from the subject.
However, the biggest change is believed to come from the new 48MP sensor, as the higher resolution will allow for digital cropping to simulate a longer focal length, with less loss of quality compared to conventional digital zoom.
This is similar to what Apple did with the main Fusion camera on the iPhone 16, where the 48MP sensor allows for 2x digital cropping – marketed as "Telephoto" – while still producing 12MP images with virtually no loss of quality.
Majin Bu points out that one of the practical benefits of a 3.5x telephoto lens is greater flexibility, especially in portrait photography. A 3.5x lens makes it easier to compose portrait shots at a more comfortable distance, especially when shooting indoors or in confined spaces.
If the leaked information is accurate, this change suggests that Apple is increasingly relying on high-resolution sensors and computational processing to overcome some of the limitations of traditional optics.
The iPhone 17 Pro can offer flexible zoom options, making portrait photography easier without sacrificing image quality.
Since the iPhone 16 Pro already has 48MP Fusion and Ultra Wide cameras, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max could be the first iPhone models to feature a triple rear camera setup, all with 48MP resolution.
