According to Reuters, US President Donald Trump announced that he will announce a large-scale tariff plan on Wednesday (April 2), a day he calls "liberation day". Accordingly, he will impose reciprocal tariffs on all countries.
"We're going to start (reciprocal tariffs) with all countries," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on March 30.
"April 2 is liberation day for our country because we will finally get the money," Mr. Trump explained.
According to CBS, economists consider this move as the culmination of the "America First trade policy" - an executive order that Mr. Trump signed on his first day in office, with the goal of restoring manufacturing in the US.
He has previously imposed high tariffs on aluminum, steel and cars, along with raising tariffs on all goods from China.
Speaking to Fox Business recently, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said the Trump administration's tariffs would focus on 10 to 15 countries with the worst trade imbalances, but he did not list them.
Mr. Trump sees tariffs as a way to protect the domestic economy from unfair global competition and as a bargaining chip to get better terms for the United States.
However, concerns about a trade war are roiling markets and raising fears of a US recession.
Mr. Trump has vowed to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose tariffs on imports from the United States.
Last February, the US leader signed a memorandum directing US trade officials to review each country and draw up a list of appropriate reciprocal measures.
But last week he left open the possibility that Washington could scale back its reciprocal tariffs, which would see some countries impose lower tariffs than those on US goods.
