[Video] Increasing number of children coming to the clinic for suspected autism

NDO - According to a report from the National Children's Hospital, in 2024, the hospital's Psychiatry Department received over 45,000 children for mental health examinations, of which nearly 20% showed signs of suspected autism. On average, each year, the National Children's Hospital receives about 10,000 children for examination for this reason. The results of a 2018 national study in 7 localities representing regions and areas showed that the rate of children under 6 years old with autism in Vietnam is 0.7%, but if the study is expanded to older children, this number could increase.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Mai Huong, Deputy Head of the Department of Psychiatry, National Children's Hospital said that currently, the rate of parents bringing children under 2 years old for examination is increasing, showing better awareness of early detection and early intervention for children.

Dr. Mai Huong emphasized that the most effective golden period for intervention for autistic children is before the age of 4, especially before the age of 3, because this is the time when the child's brain is developing strongly. Early detection and intervention helps improve the child's development, limit negative impacts, and reduce pressure on the family and society.
