Vinh Airport closed for 24 hours, from 10:50 a.m. on July 3, due to a cracked asphalt layer on the runway covering an area of 40 square meters.
Vinh airport runway damaged asphalt concrete.
Security forces at Vinh International Airport discovered many cracked asphalt concrete patches on the runway. After handling four flights this morning, the airport has temporarily suspended 20 arrivals and departures for the day to fix the problem.
Mr. Tran Hoai Phuong, Director of the Northern Airport Authority, said that the unit has decided to temporarily close Vinh airport for 24 hours, starting at 10:50 a.m. on July 3. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam will listen to reports from relevant units and assess the incident in detail. "This is a force majeure incident, and must be closed for repairs because the infrastructure does not ensure operation," Mr. Phuong said.
According to Mr. Hoang Van Thu, Director of Vinh International Airport, the surface asphalt layer has lost its adhesion to the cement concrete layer below, creating cracks, 8m long and more than 5m wide. The unit has called the contractor to inspect, prepare asphalt concrete for repair, and dispatch a scraper to remove the cracks... The repair is expected to begin at 3:00 p.m.
"The cause of the runway cracking could be the heat and the impact of the plane taking off. Up to now, the runway has been operating normally, with no incidents," said Mr. Thu.
At nearly 12 noon the same day, at the check-in counters of airlines at Vinh airport, hundreds of passengers refunded their tickets and asked about their travel schedules when their flights were delayed.
Mr. Tran Van Tuyen, a resident of Nghi Van commune, Nghi Loc district, said that this morning he had a scheduled flight at 9:15 from Vinh to Ho Chi Minh City. After checking in and settling in, he and nearly 160 passengers were informed by the captain that the runway was cracked and that they had to return to the terminal to wait for further instructions. "The incident caused me to miss my scheduled flight, so I had to call my relatives to take me home," said Mr. Tuyen.
The Northern Airports Authority has asked airlines to assist passengers to other airports in Thanh Hoa and Hanoi to continue their journeys.
Vinh Airport is 30,000m2 wide with a runway 2,400m long, 45m wide, asphalt concrete surface, put into use at the end of 2003. The apron is 38,438m2 wide, accommodating 7 aircraft parking positions. Every day, the airport operates 21-26 flights of Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways and Pacific Airlines.
Nghe An as well as the Northern and Central provinces have just experienced heat waves, with the highest temperature ranging from 36-39 degrees Celsius, in some places over 40 degrees Celsius.
