The Livelihood Consultation Day for the People in Ham Thuan Bac District was recently organized by the Binh Thuan Provincial Agricultural Extension Center with many exciting activities. The participation of a number of institutes, schools, cooperatives, and businesses inside and outside the province has accompanied and supported consultation and implementation of farming and livestock models for the people to choose their livelihood.
Boldly change the habit of growing crops and raising livestock
That day, the event of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center organizing a livelihood consultation festival in 3 highland communes of Dong Tien, Dong Giang and La Da (Ham Thuan Bac) attracted a large number of people to attend. From early morning, the rice production field concentrated in village 3, Dong Tien commune became crowded with people coming and going, chatting animatedly. Those were ethnic minority households in the area coming to listen to advice on sparse sowing of rice, applying "1 must, 5 reductions". Including reducing costs in cultivation but increasing productivity and quality of rice products. This was also the first time local people had the opportunity to watch the demonstration of unmanned fertilizer and pesticide spraying aircraft on rice fields. This image was admired by the people, because of its strangeness and being an important step in the synchronous mechanization of high-quality rice production, towards "footprint-free" fields.
From one novelty to another, not just stopping at a consulting point, but in La Da, people also got to watch a demonstration of drones spraying pesticides and fertilizing durian trees. People were consulted and guided by experts and scientists on how to produce VietGAP durian according to the chain link for export. For local pig farmers, experts at the Institute of Animal Husbandry directly "modeled" and guided them on how to process animal feed using biological products to achieve the best results.
The main point of the festival was held in the center of Dong Giang commune. In the joyful and bustling atmosphere, Mr. K' Van Phiep - a prestigious person in village 2, Dong Giang commune, could not hide his emotions. Mr. Phiep said that the livelihood festival organized by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center made the people very happy. This is an opportunity for local people to know and understand the scientific techniques of planting trees and raising livestock to increase income and improve their livelihoods. Because in the past, people raised livestock and produced traditionally on their own, so the techniques were not correct and the efficiency was not high.
Sharing the same joy, Mr. K' Van Chuyen - Village 4, Dong Giang Commune shared more: Participating in the consultation day, people were listened to and asked questions about cultivation and animal husbandry techniques. People were also allowed to pilot farming and planting models, if the conditions were suitable for the requirements of enterprises and cooperatives...
Also attending this livelihood festival, Ms. Tran Thi My Le - Vice Chairman of Ham Thuan Bac District People's Committee shared: The livelihood festival organized by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center in 3 highland communes of the district is very meaningful. This is an ethnic minority area, so the application of science and technology in production, cultivation and livestock breeding has been limited. Therefore, the festival helps farmers access new techniques, gradually promoting the potential, developing the economy of each household as well as developing the local economy. After this festival, Ham Thuan Bac District People's Committee will continue to direct relevant communes and units to act as a bridge, reconnecting farmers with units and businesses so that farmers can receive more detailed instructions on techniques. Along with that, production according to technical processes, products meet market requirements, increasing the production value of farmers.
Help farmers follow new ways and new processes in production
On the part of the organizing unit, Mr. Ngo Thai Son - Deputy Director in charge of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center said: Depending on the region, the center will have different ways of transferring scientific and technical advances, as well as sharing production and cultivation experiences. In 3 highland communes of Ham Thuan Bac, the center cooperates with institutes, schools, enterprises, and cooperatives to "hold hands and guide" people, from planting to raising livestock. After that, the enterprises will support people by arranging production models, supporting seeds, materials, and fertilizers for people to follow new methods and new processes. From there, it will spread so that other people can learn, improve their income and develop their lives.
According to Mr. Son, in previous years, the center organized individual models. After a period of evaluation, after organizing models and training courses, there was not much replication. This year, the Agricultural Extension Center selected key crops and livestock of the communes. At the same time, it coordinated with businesses, cooperatives, institutes and schools to transfer the latest knowledge in the easiest to grasp and implement way for people to quickly access. In particular, there was consultation on crops and livestock that they wanted to implement or build a production and consumption chain. The goal of the festival is to be right and hit the issues that people are really interested in. From there, connecting to create sustainable livelihoods for people. Continuing to create conditions for people in the highlands to access the application of scientific and technical advances in cultivation and livestock to adapt to climate change in the locality, creating sustainable livelihoods.
According to the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, Ham Thuan Bac is the second locality in 2024 where the unit organizes a "Livelihood Consultation Day for Ethnic Minorities". The program has practical significance, helping ethnic minorities change their thinking, learn new ways of doing things in agricultural production, not waiting or relying on the State. Currently, with the shift from supporting agricultural extension to connecting agricultural extension, the center has been and is a bridge between agricultural producers and enterprises and cooperatives. Enterprises, cooperatives, institutes and schools have provided advice in a concise, clear and specific way for people to easily grasp and follow. At the same time, enterprises support fertilizers and materials to implement farming models immediately after the consultation ends. Through the consultation day, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center hopes that ethnic minority households in Ham Thuan Bac will boldly change their farming habits, create new livelihoods, and contribute to the development of life and economy.
