At home to Brazil, Argentina won 1-0 thanks to Otamendi's high header from a corner taken by Celso in the 63rd minute.
The victory ensured Messi and his teammates firmly held the top spot, while Brazil dropped to sixth in the South American 2026 World Cup qualifying standings after losing all three of their last three matches.
Not only that, having to lose to rival Argentina also stopped Brazil's proud achievement of never losing at home in World Cup qualifying.
Now, only one team holds this record, which is Spain.
According to Argentine journalist MisterChip, at the beginning of last year, there were still 3 names sharing the same unbeaten home record: Italy, Brazil and Spain.
However, the EURO 2020 champions lost to North Macedonia in March 2022, and Brazil's 64-match unbeaten streak at home was ended by Argentina, leaving only Spain to maintain the record.
Spain's achievement is all the more impressive given that they have only hosted the World Cup once (1982), meaning they have had to qualify for all other World Cups.
In the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Spain topped Group B with 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.
