Former President Donald Trump's opponent has dropped out of the race.

"One thing that is clear to me tonight is that I am not likely to win the nomination (for the Republican Party's nomination to the White House)," Chris Christie said on January 10 (US time) before a crowd at the town hall in Windham, New Hampshire.

The surprise decision was announced after former Governor Christie failed to make it into the race for the number two spot, which was contested between former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump continues to lead the Republican primary race for the 2024 US election.

Mr Christie's withdrawal will mainly benefit Ms Haley, who has a strong showing in New Hampshire, where Mr Christie is also campaigning.

Mr. Christie announced his campaign in June 2023, deciding to challenge Mr. Trump and calling himself the alternative to the former president.

The former governor also ran in the 2016 Republican primary, but dropped out after announcing his support for Trump. In 2020, he worked with Trump’s re-election campaign on debate preparation.

But Mr Christie has since become a fierce critic of Mr Trump. At the Republican debate last September, he attacked Mr Trump for not participating in the debate with the other candidates.

In the third quarter of 2023, Mr. Christie raised nearly $3.8 million, lower than candidates like Ms. Haley and Mr. DeSantis, of course, not as much as Mr. Trump.
