Russian President Vladimir Putin and American journalist Tucker Carlson
In a two-hour interview with journalist Carlson, a former Fox News host, President Putin also said that a deal could be reached to free journalist Evan Gershkovich of The Wall Street Journal, who is being held in Russia on charges of spying for the US government.
"Specific terms can be discussed through special channels," AFP quoted the Kremlin chief as saying. Mr. Putin said the American journalist was a spy, something both The Wall Street Journal and the US government denied.
The interview marks the first time Western media have had private access to Putin since 2019. Carlson is close to former President Donald Trump, the front-runner in the Republican primary race.
According to leader Putin, the West has now realized that it is impossible to defeat Russia, despite Ukraine receiving support from the US, Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
"Until now, there have been claims that this or that strategic defeat was caused for Russia on the battlefield. However, now they clearly realize that this is difficult to achieve. In my opinion, it is impossible," the Russian President said.
He also sent a message to the US Congress, as the House of Representatives has yet to pass a new aid package for Ukraine.
"If you really want to end the conflict, you need to stop supplying weapons," the Russian leader stressed.

Asked whether Moscow was considering attacking other countries in the region, such as Poland or Latvia, President Putin said Russia had no interest in Poland, Latvia, or anywhere else.
War with Poland, if any, would only happen if Poland attacked Russia, according to Mr Putin.
Regarding the possibility of a change in leadership after the 2024 US election, Mr. Putin said there would be little change in this possibility.
