Cooling tea from hemp
If you have the opportunity to visit Quang Binh, besides enjoying special dishes such as banh loc, khoai deo, chao canh..., visitors should remember to find and enjoy a unique drink made from a thorny plant growing on the dry sand dunes: cactus tea.
Unique tea made from cactus
Over the years, the people of Quang Binh have created a cactus and stingray soup with a sour and sweet taste. Also inspired by this thorny plant, Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Hong (43 years old, owner of Cat Quang Binh tea and coffee shop) has "created" a drink with a strong hometown flavor.
"I once enjoyed cactus soup and was very impressed because such a thorny plant could be turned into such a delicious dish. There are also many cacti in Quang Binh, so I have been nurturing the idea of turning this thorny plant into a very sweet drink," said Ms. Hong.
The prickly plant like cactus, when processed, becomes a cool, sweet drink.
After harvesting, Ms. Hong washed the cactus and mixed it with other ingredients to create a refreshing, slightly sour drink. Made from locally available ingredients, this unique tea also has a very affectionate name with 2 different ways of making it.
Cactus mixed with jasmine tea, tropical fruits... is named "Oh Quang Binh"; cactus mixed with coconut water is named "Oh Quang Binh".
After being put on sale, Ms. Hong's cactus tea became a "hot trend" in Quang Binh, especially popular among young people.
'Lekima 420'
That is the name of another product created by Ms. Hong from the pear (or egg fruit), a fruit associated with the childhood of many generations.
Having the opportunity to enjoy this drink, the first thing that impresses customers is not the taste or quality of "lekima 420" but the story that Ms. Hong conveys about her love for her homeland.
Ms. Hong with drinks that are typical of Quang Binh
"This dish is named lekima 420 because this is the drink that I introduced to customers on the occasion of the 420th anniversary of the formation of Quang Binh province. Besides the product being made from local ingredients, I also hope that when people and tourists enjoy this dish, they will know about an important event of their hometown," Ms. Hong shared.
"Lekima 420" is contained in a cup with an image of the 420th anniversary of the formation of Quang Binh province.
The cup containing "lekima 420" is also very special with the image depicting Quang Binh as the carrying pole of the two ends of the country. "lekima 420" has the rich, fatty taste of milk, coconut milk mixed with the strange yet familiar aroma of ki ma pear, inside there is also jelly made from rice grown in Quang Binh.
From ingredients that no one thought could be processed into a refreshing drink, Ms. Hong has found a way to create a unique product, containing her love for her homeland, promoting to tourists the unique culture and cuisine of Quang Binh.
