Hanoi city delegation visits and works in New Zealand

The delegation included Standing Committee member of the City Party Committee, Head of the City Party Committee's Internal Affairs Committee Do Anh Tuan; Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Manh Quyen; leaders of a number of departments, branches, districts and towns in Hanoi.

The relationship between Hanoi and Wellington is increasingly effective.

In New Zealand, the delegation worked with the Council and the Wellington Capital Authority; worked with the city's professional agencies on planning, planning management; mechanisms and policies to promote economic development; social welfare and environmental protection. The delegation visited and worked with the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand; organized a meeting program with Vietnamese and New Zealand businesses.

On behalf of the Council, the Wellington capital government received and worked with the delegation with Ms. Tory Whanau - Mayor of Wellington City; also attending the working session was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to New Zealand Nguyen Van Trung.

Emphasizing that the delegation's visit took place right after the official visit to Vietnam by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon (February 2025) on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (1975-2025) and the two countries officially signed to upgrade the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; at the same time, this is also the time when Hanoi and Wellington celebrate the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening friendship and cooperation, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan thanked the warm and respectful reception that the Council and authorities of Wellington City, New Zealand, gave to the delegation.

Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan affirmed that, on the basis of the good relationship between Vietnam and New Zealand that has been upgraded, the cooperative and friendly relationship between the two capitals in the coming time will continue to deepen, becoming increasingly practical and effective.

Introducing an overview of the socio-economic development situation and key development orientations of Hanoi, the Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council said that there are many contents that can be considered to promote cooperation with New Zealand in general and Wellington City in particular.

Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan hopes that the Wellington City government will continue to support and cooperate in sharing experiences in long-term development planning and implementing the city's planning; sharing experiences on policies to promote the development of green economic models, circular economy, low-emission strategies, etc.

Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Tuan also suggested that the two capitals consider continuing to increase the exchange of high-level delegations; the two city authorities establish an information channel, connecting businesses, investors, organizations, and universities of Wellington and New Zealand to Hanoi to explore opportunities for promotion, investment, trade, tourism, and cooperation and investment in the field of education and training between the two sides. Continue to promote scholarship programs for Vietnamese students to study abroad; train and improve English proficiency for teachers; deepen people-to-people exchanges through cooperation in tourism development, art and cultural exchanges; promote cooperation in the fields of cultural industry, innovation, and experience sharing in the Creative Cities network of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), of which Hanoi and Wellington are both members.

On this occasion, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the City People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan invited the Mayor to visit and work with Hanoi and suggested that the two sides consider signing a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two capitals for the next phase.

Wellington ready to share experiences with Hanoi Capital

On behalf of the Wellington City government, Mayor Tory Whanau expressed his delight and appreciation for the working visit of the Hanoi delegation. According to Ms. Tory Whanau, over the 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations (1975-2025), the relationship between Vietnam and New Zealand has continuously developed and has increasingly become a leading important partner in the region. In particular, the two countries' official upgrading of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the visit to Vietnam by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon (February 2025) marked an important milestone, opening a period of deeper, more comprehensive and more effective cooperation between the two sides.

Ms. Tory Whanau also briefly introduced information about the capital Wellington, the political and administrative center of New Zealand, ranked 35th as the most innovative city in the world and a city with a developed cultural industry.

Wellington City has an economy based on technology, innovation, finance and media. Urban planning and development of the city with a distinctive identity, closely linking economic development, urban development and protection of natural landscapes and the environment. Wellington City Government is also focusing on reforming administrative procedures, focusing on social security work, and improving social welfare for the people.

Mayor Tory Whanau affirmed that Wellington City is always ready and willing to cooperate and share experiences with Hanoi Capital on issues of mutual concern. In the coming time, the two city authorities will assign the foreign affairs agencies of both sides to continue researching, reviewing and proposing cooperation contents in the next phase, deepening the good relationship between the two capitals.

Hanoi welcomes investment enterprises

During the working visit to New Zealand, the Hanoi delegation organized a meeting with Vietnamese and New Zealand businesses.

Also attending the program were Ms. Tory Whanau - Mayor of Wellington City; Vietnamese Ambassador to New Zealand Nguyen Van Trung.

On the Hanoi side, there were Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, delegates participating in the working delegation and a number of businesses from Hanoi and New Zealand.

At the meeting, the city leaders introduced the potentials and strengths of a number of priority sectors and fields to attract investment in line with the general development trend, which can participate in the global value chain and exploit the advantages of the capital as well as the strengths of provinces and cities in the region; projects in sectors and fields with advanced technology and innovation; processing and manufacturing industries with spillover effects and high added value, clean energy, renewable energy, sustainable development, etc.

The Hanoi government welcomes and encourages potential and willing foreign enterprises to increase investment in Hanoi - especially in the fields of green transformation, digital transformation, circular economy, knowledge economy, climate change response, supporting industry development, innovation associated with promoting technology application and transfer, especially high, green and clean technology.

During the meeting, New Zealand businesses and investors connected and exchanged information with leaders of the Department of Industry and Trade, leaders of some districts and businesses of Hanoi City on the fields of planning, urban development, transportation, environment, digital economic development models, green economy, and circular economy.

Also in Wellington, the Hanoi delegation visited and worked with officials and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand.

At the meeting, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to New Zealand Nguyen Van Trung highly appreciated the purpose, significance and practical and effective foreign affairs activities of the Hanoi delegation and said that the two countries' upgrading of relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will open up many cooperation opportunities between localities, including Hanoi, with the capital and cities of New Zealand.

On behalf of the working delegation, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan sincerely thanked the close and effective coordination of the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand and the Ambassador himself for the working delegation.

Informing about the socio-economic development situation of the capital and key tasks in the coming time, Chairman of the City People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan suggested that the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand continue to be a bridge to promote friendly cooperation between Hanoi and localities of New Zealand. In the immediate future, promote the negotiation of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Hanoi and Wellington in the new development period to sign in 2025 on the occasion of the Mayor of Wellington visiting and working in Hanoi.

In addition, the Embassy is requested to continue to be a bridge, supporting the promotion of investment, trade, tourism, and promoting the image of Hanoi Capital to New Zealand businesses and investors.
