We still remember clearly at the weightlifting stadium at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia (competition day 16-5), the moment Tran Dinh Thang lifted the third time of the clean and jerk with 209kg. At that time, everyone was nervous and Thang smiled when the pair of weights were lifted by his strength. However, the referee rang the bell to confirm that the weightlifter from Hai Duong had not done it correctly, not recognizing the achievement. The space was heavy with everything. Immediately, the coaching staff raised the complaint card. After a break to review the video, the referee team recognized Tran Dinh Thang's achievement in this time. The result meant that Tran Dinh Thang won the overall victory and won the gold medal in the men's over 89kg weightlifting category at the 32nd SEA Games.
The emotion exploded with the chubby-faced weightlifter as he rushed to hug the coaching staff and the team leader, and the entire Vietnamese weightlifting team laughed in the joy of victory. At that moment, opening his heart, Tran Dinh Thang said, "I kept my promise to myself to achieve a medal at this SEA Games. I also kept my promise to my aunt (Thang's coach) at Hai Duong weightlifting that I would have a medal. A gold medal is truly happiness."
That was a moment of joy on the SEA Games 32 stage in Cambodia. More than half a month later, at the meeting to commend and reward Hai Duong coaches and athletes for their excellent achievements at the SEA Games 32, organized by Hai Duong province on June 9, Tran Dinh Thang was still the same, smiling brightly at his achievements.
It is a coincidence that Hai Duong sports have two faces who have made impressive achievements at the two SEA Games 31 and SEA Games 32 close to each other. In 2022, when competing at the SEA Games 31 at home, table tennis player Nguyen Duc Tuan brought home the gold medal in men's singles table tennis, making the whole country's sports community burst into joy. This year at the SEA Games 32, Tran Dinh Thang's gold medal in weightlifting was a perfect effort.
This is the first time Tran Dinh Thang has won a SEA Games gold medal and also the first time Vietnamese men's weightlifting has won a gold medal in the men's over 89kg category. Previously, we only participated in the highest category of 85kg and even coach Luu Van Thang, who is currently the head coach of the Vietnamese weightlifting team, only won a bronze medal in this category at the 2005 SEA Games. Therefore, Tran Dinh Thang's gold medal achievement is a mark of history.
Thang is from Hai Duong city. Tran Dinh Thang's chance to start weightlifting was quite random because he is passionate about sports and likes weightlifting, so this student participated in the competition program of Phu Dong Sports Festival in the locality in 2013 (when Thang was 14 years old). With the eyes of a professional, at that time, Coach Nguyen Thi Thiet immediately selected Tran Dinh Thang to aim for a professional weightlifter for Hai Duong. No one could predict anything, but after a period of training, Tran Dinh Thang showed good qualities and had medal results in domestic competitions.
In fact, Tran Dinh Thang's forte is the 96kg-102kg heavyweight category. When he matures, Tran Dinh Thang is undefeated in this weight category in domestic competitions. At the end of last year, Thang won 3 gold medals in the weight category when participating in weightlifting at the 9th National Sports Festival in 2022, successfully defending his achievements from the previous edition.
Competing in the 32nd SEA Games, the coaching staff had to choose a reasonable strategy to help the athletes lose weight to best match the prescribed weight of the over 89kg category. That requires a suitable professional roadmap, so right after the 9th National Sports Festival in 2022, Tran Dinh Thang received the most suitable preparation to achieve success at the 32nd SEA Games as recently.
Despite his large stature, Tran Dinh Thang is an emotional person. As Thang shared, the weightlifter kept his promise to his coach (Coach Nguyen Thi Thiet). It is hard to describe because after many years, Hai Duong weightlifting has a gold medalist. She, Coach Nguyen Thi Thiet, is the coach who trained Thang from the beginning until now he is a national athlete, with a SEA Games gold medal. 20 years ago, weightlifter Nguyen Thi Thiet won the first SEA Games medal in her career at the 2003 SEA Games. After all these years, at the 32nd SEA Games-2023, Coach Nguyen Thi Thiet's favorite student, Tran Dinh Thang, also won the first SEA Games medal...
At the 32nd SEA Games, Tran Dinh Thang achieved a snatch of 150kg, a clean and jerk of 290kg and a total of 359kg to win the gold medal in the men's over 89kg category in weightlifting. Tran Dinh Thang's clean and jerk and total results were recognized as new records of the SEA Games.
