Participating in the World Weightlifting Cup in the men's 55 kg category, Lai Gia Thanh faced many strong opponents, notably Pang Un Chol (DPRK) and Chom Chuen Nathawat (Thailand). However, in the first attempt, the Vietnamese weightlifter took the lead with a lift of 118 kg. Meanwhile, Pang Un Chol succeeded at 115 kg and Chom Chuen Nathawat only succeeded at 116 kg.
In the second attempt, Lai Ka-shing continued to lead at 120 kg, his two opponents succeeded at 118 kg and 119 kg respectively. In the decisive snatch, all three lifters failed in their choices: Lai Ka-shing failed at 122 kg, Pang Un Chol failed with the registered weight of 120 kg and lifter Chom Chuen Nathawat also failed at 121 kg.
Therefore, Lai Ka-shing won the gold medal in the snatch with a score of 120 kg. Weightlifter Chom Chuen Nathawat won the silver medal with 119 kg and Pang Un Chol won the bronze medal with 118 kg.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Hung, in charge of weightlifting at the Department of Sports and Physical Training, said that this was a worthy achievement as Lai Gia Thanh competed with confidence and courage. He shared: “This is also Lai Gia Thanh’s strength. From the beginning, the coaching staff came up with a weightlifting strategy so that Thanh could compete for the gold medal with two strong opponents from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the host country, Thailand.”
Following the snatch, Lai Gia Thanh entered the clean and jerk competition. In the first attempt, he failed to lift 143 kg. In the second attempt, Lai Gia Thanh performed well with this weight and then in the third attempt, he succeeded with the registered weight of 148 kg. With a total lift of 268 kg, Lai Gia Thanh won another bronze medal.

At this year's World Cup, Vietnamese weightlifters sent 9 athletes to participate. Of these, 5 athletes are in the group competing for tickets to the Olympics: Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan, Trinh Van Vinh (61 kg men), Pham Dinh Thi (49 kg women), Quang Thi Tam (59 kg women), Pham Thi Hong Thanh (71 kg women).
On April 1, weightlifter Khong My Phuong also competed. She completed 3 clean and jerks with weights of 72 kg, 74 kg, 76 kg. Entering the clean and jerk competition, My Phuong continued to show confidence when successfully conquering the weight of 84 kg. With a total lift of 160 kg, My Phuong brought home for Vietnamese weightlifting 1 silver medal in clean and jerk, 1 bronze medal in clean and jerk and 1 bronze medal in total.
The 2024 World Weightlifting Cup will take place from March 31 to April 11 in Phuket, Thailand. On April 2, two Vietnamese athletes, Trinh Van Vinh and Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan, will compete in the 61 kg category. This is an event that is expected to continue to bring tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics for Vietnamese sports .
