The assassination of a presidential candidate is not new in past election campaigns.

In 1912, former US President Teddy Roosevelt was shot in the chest during a campaign speech in Milwaukee. After being shot, he reached into his chest and pulled out a 50-page speech with two large holes in it. He credited it to his survival. He finished his speech with a bullet lodged in his body.
A much more serious incident occurred on June 6, 1968, when Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was shot multiple times in Los Angeles. The gunman was captured and Kennedy was pronounced dead the following day.
Modern presidents have survived potential or planned assassination attempts, including Trump. In 2017, the Secret Service thwarted a plan by an affiliate of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) to attack Trump during the 2017 ASEAN Summit in the Philippines.
While there are no rules about what happens when a presidential candidate is assassinated, there are general guidelines for what happens if a candidate dies. The Brookings Institution explains that this depends on when a candidate dies or becomes unable to run for office.
If a primary election has not yet been held, a particular party may need to postpone events to allow a new group of candidates to enter the field. If a party has selected its final candidate but that candidate is unable to run, the party will need to select a new candidate. Both the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee have different ways of selecting a new candidate.
