South Korea mobilizes all forces to respond to serious forest fire disaster
According to VNA, Acting President of South Korea Han Duck Soo announced on March 26 that the government has launched a comprehensive nationwide response to deal with the serious forest fires raging in the southeastern region of the country, killing at least 18 people and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate.
Acting President Han Duck Soo also stated that the government has raised the forest fire alert level to the highest level. The nationwide response allows relevant agencies to mobilize maximum resources to control the situation.
Mr. Han Duck Soo emphasized that the forest fire disaster is developing at an unprecedented level of severity, beyond all previous predictions and assessment models. He noted that the forest fire that broke out for the fifth consecutive day is causing unprecedented damage.
According to authorities, the fires broke out on March 21 in Sancheong County, North Gyeongsang Province, and then spread to neighboring areas such as Uiseong, Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang and Yeongdeok due to strong winds and dry weather.
So far, the fires have ravaged more than 17,000 hectares of forest and destroyed more than 200 homes and factories. About 23,000 people have been ordered to evacuate for safety.
Thousands of firefighters, along with dozens of helicopters and firefighting vehicles, have been deployed to fight the fire. Since the fire began, the South Korean military has mobilized about 5,000 soldiers and 146 helicopters to assist in firefighting efforts.
