Many literary works are considered the spiritual heritage of the nation but are being made fun of by a group of young people. Most recently, a TikTok account posted a video of a group of young people reciting the poem Nam Quoc Son Ha at a drinking table, causing outrage in the community.
Almost every Vietnamese person knows the poem Nam quoc son ha (Rivers and mountains of the South) by the famous general Ly Thuong Kiet (1019-1105). In the battle against the Song army in 1077, the poem was considered the first Declaration of Independence, affirming the sovereignty of the Dai Viet state.
The poem has had more than 30 different translations, but perhaps, literature lovers are familiar with the following translation: The mountains and rivers of the Southern country belong to the Southern king/ Their fate is clearly determined in the book of heaven/ Why do the bandits come to invade?/ You will be beaten to pieces!
The above quote shows the great stature and significance of the poem, not only in the field of literature but also in the history of the nation. However, the group of young people above added and changed some sentences of the poem and then shouted at the drinking table. This is clearly a deviant behavior that needs to be condemned, especially since the poem Nam Quoc Son Ha is considered a legacy of our ancestors. The act of altering and distorting the poem not only insults our ancestors but also distorts history.
Not long before, a poem by poet To Huu called Luom was also edited by a young male rapper to create strange lyrics: The skinny boy/ The pretty bag/ The nimble legs/ The shaved head... Immediately after that, in response to public opinion, this male rapper had to apologize.
From the events of the two poems Nam quoc son ha and Luom , whether intentional or not, they are both sad stories for the consciousness of a part of today's youth. What will happen when these videos are widely spread on social platforms and are received and promoted by young people? In fact, both of these videos have become trends on TikTok and not everyone thinks this is a "joke", so many people have expressed strong opposition.
More importantly, there are works, typically Nam Quoc Son Ha, that absolutely should not be used as a joke!
