Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a meeting to update the situation and solutions to respond to the US tariff policy.

On the evening of April 7, right after chairing a conference between the Prime Minister and Vietnamese representative agencies abroad to proactively adapt to the new situation in international trade, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with ministries and branches on developing balanced and sustainable trade with the United States.

This is the third meeting of the Government on promoting balanced and sustainable trade development with the United States after President Donald Trump announced a new tariff policy.

Attending the conference were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son; ministers, heads of ministerial-level agencies, government agencies; leaders of ministries, branches and central agencies.

Welcoming the responsible and practical opinions of the delegates, concluding the meeting, the Prime Minister requested relevant ministries, branches and agencies to complete the dossiers and documents to serve the working delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc to negotiate with the United States on balanced and sustainable trade development.

The Prime Minister directed the negotiating team to request the United States to consider and postpone the application of the new tariff policy for at least 45 days so that the two sides have time to discuss, negotiate and prepare for the transitional status; continue to negotiate with the United States to promote balanced, sustainable trade that benefits both sides, for the consumers of both sides and does not affect the international commitments that Vietnam participates in, moving towards the two sides having new commitments on bilateral trade in the direction that General Secretary To Lam proposed in his phone call with President Trump on April 4.

The Prime Minister directed ministries, branches, localities and units to continue to consider and increase the purchase of more goods that the US has strengths in and that Vietnam has demand for, including promoting Boeing's delivery to Vietnam Airlines; continuing to resolve difficulties of US businesses; thoroughly and effectively resolving issues of concern to the US; properly handling issues related to monetary policy in accordance with Vietnamese law and international practices, ensuring stable interest rates, exchange rates, balance and suitability with the Vietnamese economy; reviewing non-tariff issues, providing satisfactory answers, close to the actual situation.

The Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to review and strictly control to prevent any unfortunate incidents related to the origin of goods. The Ministry of Science and Technology shall review regulations related to copyright and intellectual property, strictly implement Vietnamese regulations, protect the rights and legitimate interests of related parties; and prevent counterfeit, fake and disguised goods from entering the market.

Ministries and sectors should study the expansion of preferential credit packages for aquaculture, and at the same time study credit packages to support businesses and industries that are heavily impacted; study interest rate reductions; reduce or defer taxes, fees, charges, and land rents for businesses; review value-added tax refunds; reduce administrative procedures and reduce hassles for businesses.

Along with that, ministries, branches, units and enterprises, through different channels, work with the US side to request the US to consider having a balanced and sustainable tariff policy and trade cooperation with Vietnam; suitable to Vietnam's conditions and circumstances and in line with the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
