From mid-April to August every year is the anchovy fishing season for Phu Yen fishermen, mostly in the Hon Yen area. The anchovy nets of fishermen not only bring income to their families but also create unique images on the sea along the coast of Hon Yen in Tuy An district, Phu Yen province.
Vietnam.vn introduces the photo series “Anchovy fishing in Phu Yen” by author Do Thanh Nam taken in Phu Yen. The photo series was submitted by the author to the Photo and Video Contest “Happy Vietnam”, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications.
The anchovy fishing season along the coast of Hon Yen starts from April to August. Each fishing boat has 10-13 fishermen. They cast and collect the nets together.
Because of this surprising and strange beauty, coming to Hon Yen these days, the most beautiful and attractive thing is not the beach or the mountains here, but the wonderfully graceful "dances" of the fishermen throwing nets to hunt for anchovies. Those dances are observed, described more vividly and strangely through the perspective of the flycam device.
Under the skillful hands of fishermen who have spent their whole lives at sea, the shape of the net changes continuously, forming different shapes, creating a special image. The sea water around Hon Yen is green all year round like jade, creating a difference in the sea area during the anchovy net season.
For fishermen, they come here to stay awake and sleep with the fishermen in the hope of watching and capturing the most vivid, meaningful and beautiful moments of the nets on the vast ocean. In particular, when observed from above, the blue nets made of rough, stiff fishing lines on land become soft, winding like silk strips when thrown by the fishermen on the ocean. The entire fishing ground is like an art stage with all kinds of beautiful shapes and surprisingly beautiful colors, and the fishermen are the dancers who perform skillfully with the nets thrown out and brought back very skillfully.
For fishermen, each time they cast their nets to catch anchovies is a time to place their hopes on a catch full of fish. In recent years, each time they cast their nets, they also carry the eager anticipation of photographers and photography enthusiasts from all over the country.
