Man jumps into river to save drowning child
Hearing the cry for help, without thinking, he jumped into the river.
At noon on May 27, the phone repair shop of Mr. Pham Van Phuc (32 years old, resident of Quarter 1, Dong Thanh Ward, Dong Ha City) was bustling with people coming in and out to repair phones. While fixing a customer's phone, Mr. Phuc recounted the story of saving a person 2 days ago.
At around 5pm on May 25, Mr. Phuc was sweeping the front yard of his house when he heard a cry for help from the bank of the Hieu River, right in front of his phone store on Hoang Dieu Street. He quickly ran to the other side of the river, looked down at the river surface and saw a whirlpool and a clump of black hair.
"I jumped into the river to save the child without thinking. At that time, the water was flowing fast and muddy because it had rained heavily the day before. The child was about a hand's breadth under the river," Phuc said.
From the shore to the location where the child had an accident was 3m, Mr. Phuc quickly put his arms around the child's waist and lifted him up to the surface of the water. The location of the accident was a deep abyss because the riverbank had been renovated into an embankment, there was no longer a natural riverbank.
"The baby was unconscious but still breathing, so I brought him to the surface to let him breathe. From the time I heard the cry for help until I brought him to shore was about 2 minutes," Mr. Phuc added, if we had been a little later, we might not have made it in time.
After bringing the victim to shore, another person provided first aid, then the family took the child to the hospital.
Mr. Phuc said: "At that time I was a bit tired, but I was happy to save the child, I didn't think much about it."

Be careful when your children play near rivers and streams.
Mr. Nguyen Van Huong (41 years old, residing in Quarter 1, Dong Giang Ward, Dong Ha City) said that that afternoon his daughter, her sister and another friend went to play on the banks of Hieu River, unfortunately his 7-year-old daughter slipped and fell into the river.
The older sister called for help, but was so scared that she could only mumble and point to the river, unable to say anything.
"The family is very grateful to Mr. Phuc for saving the child in time. There are people in that situation who would not dare to jump in to save him.
I am still worried because my child is being treated in the hospital and his health is stable. I also advise families and children to be careful when playing in river areas," said Mr. Huong.
Grandmother Hoang Thi Duong, 69 years old, kept saying: "Phuc ran out and jumped in to save him in time. Thanks to him, otherwise my grandchild would have definitely died."
