Carrying out the task of "Registering protection, management and development of geographical indications for Khe Sanh coffee products of Quang Tri province", this morning, October 22, the Institute of Soil and Fertilizers in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology and the People's Committee of Huong Hoa district organized a training conference to ensure food hygiene and safety and raise awareness and capacity for subjects on geographical indications (GIs), management of origin and quality of Khe Sanh coffee products protected by GIs according to the value chain.

Grown in Huong Hoa district nearly 100 years ago with many different types of coffee such as: jackfruit coffee (Liberia), Robusta coffee, Arabica coffee.
Over time, Arabica coffee has proven to be a type of coffee suitable for local climate and soil conditions. Coffee has long been the main source of income for a part of the population, and is the main agricultural product of the district and the province. To date, a large specialized coffee growing area has been formed with an area of over 3,700 hectares.
In particular, Arabica coffee trees grown in Huong Phung commune have a very distinctive aroma and taste. During the years 2021 - 2024, Arabica coffee products of units in the district have won many high prizes when participating in Vietnamese specialty coffee competitions.
Identifying coffee as a key crop to promote local socio-economic development, in recent times, Huong Hoa district has supported farmers in applying technical advances in production, building clean agricultural areas; supporting businesses in investing in product processing technology from industrial promotion sources, contributing to promoting the development of raw material areas, creating jobs for workers, and increasing the added value of products.
In order to ensure the protection of growing areas and meet the requirements of the export market, protect the reputation and quality of coffee products, the Provincial People's Committee has issued Document No. 3100/UBND-KGVX agreeing to approve the map of geographical production areas corresponding to the "Khe Sanh" geographical identification number for coffee products of Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province.
The People's Committee of Huong Hoa district is assigned to be the entity to register, manage and use the place name "Khe Sanh" to register the geographical indication "Khe Sanh" for coffee products of Huong Hoa district. The Department of Science and Technology is assigned to preside over and coordinate with relevant agencies to guide units to complete the procedures for registering geographical indications in accordance with regulations.
Currently, the People's Committee of Huong Hoa district has submitted an application for GI registration to the National Office of Intellectual Property. At the same time, it is proposed that the National Office of Intellectual Property, the Institute of Soil and Fertilizers, and the Department of Science and Technology support the acceleration of the appraisal process of GI registration applications so that the district can soon organize a ceremony to receive the certificate during the 2024 coffee crop season. From there, there will be a basis to record the right to use GI for organizations and individuals to bring Khe Sanh coffee products protected by GI to the market in 2025.

At the conference, delegates were introduced by experts from the Institute of Soil and Fertilizers about geographical indications, management models, management of origin and quality of Khe Sanh coffee products protected by geographical indications according to the value chain. National technical regulations for coffee processing facilities - Conditions for ensuring food hygiene and safety.
Accordingly, products bearing geographical indications are green coffee, ground coffee, and roasted coffee beans of the Arabica var catimor variety. The production areas of products bearing geographical indications include the communes of Huong Phung, Huc, Huong Tan, Ba Tang, Tan Lien, Tan Hop, Huong Linh, Huong Son, Huong Loc, A Doi and Khe Sanh town.
Introducing the draft regulations on management and use of "Khe Sanh" GI for Khe Sanh coffee products of Quang Tri province; the role of Khe Sanh Coffee Association and the direction of activities to meet the management of Khe Sanh coffee GI.
