Taiwan said it was on high alert against Chinese activities as the island is scheduled to hold presidential and legislative elections on January 13, according to Reuters.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry has reported since last month that it has recorded several cases of Chinese balloons flying across the Taiwan Strait, then crossing airspace north of the island before disappearing.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry said this morning, January 3, that in the previous 24 hours, they had detected four Chinese balloons flying across the Taiwan Strait, three of which flew over the center of the island.
According to Taiwan's Defense Agency, three Chinese balloons flew 194 km, 296 km and 294 km southwest of an important military base in Taichung city, then disappeared at different points.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry did not say what it thought the Chinese balloons were used for, but it has previously said it believed they were mainly used for weather monitoring.
This is the first time Taiwan's Defense Ministry has said that Chinese balloons have flown over the territory since a series of such balloons were reported flying across the Taiwan Strait starting last month, according to Reuters.
There is currently no information about China's reaction to Taiwan's above accusations.
Over the past year and a half, China has held two major military exercises around Taiwan and regularly sent warships and fighter jets to the Taiwan Strait, according to Reuters.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said on the morning of December 24 that in the previous 24 hours, it had detected eight Chinese fighter jets flying across the median line in the Taiwan Strait, according to Reuters. Taiwan's Defense Ministry said it had dispatched forces to monitor the Chinese fighter jets, including J-10, J-11 and J-16 aircraft.
