The Chinese military said today, February 17, that its air force and navy had monitored and warned a Canadian warship passing through the Taiwan Strait on February 16, according to Reuters.
In a statement today, the Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command also said that the Canadian warship's actions were "deliberately stirring up trouble" and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. "The forces of the theater always maintain a high level of alert and resolutely oppose all threats and provocations," the Eastern Theater Command stressed.

Earlier, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Royal Canadian Navy's Halifax-class frigate HMCS Ottawa passed through the Taiwan Strait on February 16. This is the first time a Canadian warship has passed through the Taiwan Strait since the beginning of the year, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said on February 16 that the HMCS Ottawa was moving north and that Taiwanese forces were also monitoring it.
In October 2024, a US warship and a Canadian warship sailed together through the Taiwan Strait, less than a week after China conducted a new round of combat exercises around the island.
In its daily update on Chinese military activity released this morning, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said that in the previous 24 hours, it had detected 41 Chinese military aircraft and nine ships operating around the island, concentrated in the Taiwan Strait and off the southwest coast of Taiwan, according to Reuters.
