The novel is about Tiem village - a village with a rich revolutionary tradition in the Central region. The genealogy of a large family in the village was lost during the war and was not found until 1975.

Through a journey of genealogy, the book recounts the history of the village over a period of about 90 years (1885-1975).

A part of the history of the Party and the country is reflected at a miniature level in the history of that special village: the Can Vuong uprising, the De Tham insurgents were brought back to the village and executed; the movement to fight against the French following Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh in the early 1920s.

The deadlock of the scholars when the court abolished the examination system, the uprisings against the protectorate government were severely suppressed by the French. The event of establishing the Party cell, the losses of the Party in the years 1930-1931 in the village.

The next generation of young people joined the revolution and resistance. Many went through prison, some became important figures of the Party. The ironic and tragic circumstances when land reform was implemented in the village.

"It seemed that his train of thought was gradually sinking into a vague realm, half real and half unreal. He told himself: I must return to the village!

As soon as he reached the end of the alley, he saw that his house was on fire. He rushed in, reaching for the small box containing the family tree book, but a burning beam fell down, crushing and burning the box. The family tree book was really on fire.

But where is his son? He rushed out of the house, running and shouting: Tan, where is my son? He ran and ran...

He found himself at the village temple. The temple was covered in smoke and straw, and he could not go in to find his son. He ran to the Hien Tu Temple, where the village worshiped those who had passed exams and were highly respected. Did my son come here with you? No one answered, only the sacrificial objects were scattered and broken.

He ran to the Holy House, where the village worshiped Confucius: My son often reads your books, sir, has he ever been here? Confucius could no longer answer. His statue had been smashed by the Left Army.

He ran to find his son again.

The whole village was ablaze. A group of Leftists began to chase him. They shouted: Kill him, kill him! There was a chirping sound in his ears, it was clear that they were shooting after him.

He crawled through the bamboo hedge at the entrance of Gieng hamlet. They were still chasing him. He ran across the main road, heading west. The footsteps of the left-wing army were getting closer and closer.

He suddenly tripped over the edge of a bell hanging in the middle of the road and fell down. When he looked up, he saw a hideous face, and a spear aimed at his chest, stabbing down...", excerpt from the work.

The lost genealogy book also wrote about the immaturity after the August Revolution - before 1975 in the village: destroying temples and pagodas, eliminating the private economy, causing hundreds of years old occupations such as silk weaving, making vermicelli and cakes... to fade away, the village market, which was the busiest in the region, became deserted.

During those tumultuous 100 years, generations of Tiem villagers have always shown their strong patriotism and love for their homeland and followed the revolution. They have contributed significantly to the revolutionary cause like many other traditional villages across the country.

The author, Major General Ho Sy Hau, 77 years old, is former Director of the Economic Department of the Ministry of National Defense.

During the war against America, he was an engineer who designed and constructed the oil pipeline across Truong Son, and was recognized for his important contributions to the oil industry during the years of fighting America to save the country.

The novel The River of Fire (2012) by Major General Ho Sy Hau won the B prize from the Ministry of National Defense on the topic of armed forces and revolutionary war, "is an epic about the Truong Son oil soldiers".

Major General Ho Sy Hau is the son of Mr. Ho Viet Thang - former Secretary of Nghe An Provincial Party Committee, former Minister of Food and Foodstuffs.

Mr. Hau lived with his father in the Viet Bac resistance zone and was close to Uncle Ho during his time in the resistance zone.
