In the aviation industry, where flights last for hours, schedules are unpredictable and work pressure is ever-present, there are love stories that still blossom and last.
One of those beautiful stories is the pilot couple of Vietnam Airlines, Do Minh Duc (born in 1988) and Ngo Gia Han (born in 1998). Together they wrote a journey of love, sharing their passion for the sky and flights.
The turning point, the fateful encounter of life
Before becoming a pilot, Minh Duc spent seven years as a flight attendant at Vietnam Airlines, while Gia Han studied Architecture. But then, it was their love for the sky that made them both change direction. Duc decided to pursue his dream of becoming a cockpit master, while Gia Han – with her passion for exploring the vast clouds – did not hesitate to give up her old path.
They first met at the Bay Viet pilot training school - where they both began their journey to conquer the sky. From the stressful days of studying, the pressure tests, to the times they overcame challenges together, they gradually became close companions. When they went to the US for basic pilot training, their friendship became even closer through long training flights, and times of piloting planes through harsh weather conditions.
At first, they only saw each other as colleagues and like-minded friends. But after returning to Vietnam and joining Vietnam Airlines, their feelings gradually blossomed. Under the same sky, sharing the same passions and challenges, they realized that the other was their perfect other half. A year later, at the end of 2022, they officially became one, opening a new journey, not only in the sky but also in life.
Same industry, same profession - Understanding and sharing
As colleagues and life partners, they have the opportunity to understand each other’s work pressures. Because they are both pilots, they easily share and sympathize with each other’s work difficulties, from long, tiring flying days to stressful moments in the cockpit. “We can talk to each other about planes, about the sky, about the airports we set foot in day after day, month after month, without ever getting bored,” Gia Han shared.
One of their best memories is their time as pilot students in the US. At that time, they not only studied and trained together but also had the opportunity to fly together across the country, piloting planes through the clouds and seeing the vast US from above. It was not only a professional challenge but also an emotional moment.
Taking off together, conquering the vast sky together, they not only improve their skills but also understand and accompany each other in every moment. Each airport they set foot in is not only a new destination but also a milestone in the brilliant love journey of two young people full of ambition.
How to keep the fire of love burning
The tight flight schedule sometimes makes them not have much time together. However, this couple has their own way to keep the love alive. Normally, pilots flying for 1.5 months will have 1 week off and both will arrange time to have a vacation together, taking advantage of that time to travel. They have taken each other everywhere from Da Lat, Hue, Saigon to Japan, Korea, Thailand... Both have the same taste in food, so on each trip, the first destination is always delicious local restaurants.
Long flights apart have not diminished their love. Facetime, texting and special gifts from their destinations are the little things that help them maintain their connection.
Working in the aviation industry, they also have very "aviation" ways of expressing their feelings. That was the time Minh Duc sent the greeting "Good flight" on the information board in the cockpit, along with a heart next to it when he knew Gia Han was the flight controller right after. His small actions surprised and made her happy throughout the flight.
Ngo Gia Han commented on her husband as a neat, caring and always listening person. As for Minh Duc, Gia Han is a gentle, emotional girl who knows how to take care of her family. Those are the things that make their love stronger and stronger.
Sharing about their plans for the future, Gia Han wishes to stick with the A321 fleet, while Minh Duc is challenged with the new Boeing B787 aircraft. But even though they fly on different aircraft, they still have the same goal: to devote themselves to Vietnam Airlines and build a solid home together.
Their love is proof that no matter the height, no matter the challenges, as long as there is understanding, trust and companionship, love can still shine above the clouds.
