Despite companies constantly looking for new solutions, lithium-polymer is still the battery technology used in smartphones, just like it was 20 years ago. However, Honor is breaking that by introducing a new type of battery into its smartphones for the first time.
Honor Magic V2 is currently unrivaled in thinness
Known about a year ago through the presentation of Honor CEO George Zhao, the new silicon-carbon battery technology has been officially deployed by Honor on the company's most high-end smartphone, the Magic V2 foldable screen. First launched in China in September last year, the Magic V2 has now officially appeared in the international market. Thanks to the new battery technology, the Magic V2 has become the thinnest foldable screen smartphone ever and after nearly 6 months, no product has been able to shake this throne. One of the reasons for that advantage is the new battery type, which is especially compact and has a larger capacity.
So what are the characteristics of the new battery? First, the absence of lithium in the composition. Second, the theoretical capacity of the new battery per gram is about 10 times higher than that of traditional graphite. Third, the new technology allows the phone to operate stably and reliably at low voltages (at voltages below 3.4V, the new battery delivers 3 times more energy than traditional batteries. Compared to the graphite system, silicon-carbon delivers 240% more energy).
It all starts with silicon-carbon battery technology.
The total actual capacity increase at this point is 12.8%. While not 10 times larger than in theory, in any case this allows for a significant reduction in battery size while maintaining (and even increasing) capacity. This is why the Honor Magic V2 can be equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery like the Magic Vs but in a thinner design.
At first glance, the case is only thinner and the battery capacity is slightly increased, but in fact, there has been no breakthrough in the field of battery technology for a long time. We can hope that Honor will not stop there and that their competitors will also start to join the new race in battery life.
