On April 13, India marked an important step forward in the field of defense technology when it successfully conducted a test of a laser directed energy weapon (DEW) system, officially joining the ranks of countries possessing new-generation weapon technology capable of neutralizing enemy drones and flying devices.

According to India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the test was conducted at Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, with the vehicle-mounted MK-II(A) version of the laser weapon system developed by CHESS.

"During the field demonstration, the system demonstrated superior capabilities in effectively destroying fixed-wing UAV targets and swarming drones, causing severe structural damage and completely disabling the enemy's surveillance sensor system," DRDO said.

With this achievement, India is taking an important step towards developing high-power directed energy weapons like other defense powers such as the US, China and Russia.

The Indian government is now placing strategic priority on developing cutting-edge weapons such as laser and hypersonic weapons to enhance the defence capabilities and combat readiness of the armed forces.

At the same time, the Indian Air Force is also accelerating the integration of these modern weapon systems into air force platforms in the near future./.
