There are literature classes... very different.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/12/2024

Teaching literature in recent years is very different from before, completely changing the way of teaching and learning.

The one-way communication method of teachers talking and students listening, teachers lecturing/reading and students taking notes in literature classes is gradually being eliminated. Instead, interactions between students and teachers, between students and students are promoted; speaking skills are enhanced more than writing skills which are specific to literature; students are put at the center of teaching and learning activities; testing and evaluation methods are changed...

Not just learning literature

Since the 2018 General Education Program was put into effect, literature teaching has been "transformed" even more. It is easy to see that students are learning a wider variety of text types (the previous program was mostly literary and artistic texts), enhancing the harmony of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. And the "hottest" thing recently is the practice of creating test and assessment questions using new texts that students have not yet learned, not in textbooks...

Participating in the demonstration teaching sessions of many teachers of specialized subjects, it is clear that the literature teaching lesson has many new and interesting points... For example, with the lesson about author Nguyen Du and the work Truyen Kieu (literature grade 11), Ms. Nguyen Thi Vu Hue (teacher at Phu Nhuan High School, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City) "introduced" a magnificent literature project "Awakening Truyen Kieu, loving literature more".

The highlight of the project report was the activities (of 7 groups of students) expressed in many different forms such as: Surveying and researching the level of interest of students in medieval literature and the work Truyen Kieu ; Making daily products (calendars, comics, stamps, shirts, posters...) inspired by Truyen Kieu ; Comparing and contrasting characters in Truyen Kieu by Nguyen Du with characters in Kim Van Kieu story by Thanh Tam Tai Nhan; Dramatizing some excerpts of Truyen Kieu and introducing some games... Ms. Nguyen Thi Vu Hue said: "This is a way to help students love Truyen Kieu more and be aware of finding the immortal works of their ancestors through learning literature".

Bringing life into STEM degree classes

In early November, Ms. Le Thi Duyen (literature teacher at Tran Phu High School, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City) also successfully conducted a cluster demonstration lesson with the lesson "STEM Product Report - Introducing a work of art". The lesson combined 3 student activities, including: speaking and listening skills; dramatization activities (students reenacted a scene from the play Half a Life of Incense ), introducing and presenting the song One Round of Vietnam, introducing and presenting products according to the STEM model (an advanced educational method to practice skills related to 4 factors: science, technology, engineering, mathematics). This is a very new way of teaching, the observers are like attending an... presentation and performance of art.

Meanwhile, some literature teachers at Tay Thanh High School tend to bring real life into literature lessons. When teaching the reading part of the Floating Market - Cultural Features of the Mekong Delta (informative text) in grade 10, Ms. Truong Tuyet Loan had an initiative to assign students to groups to revive the atmosphere of the floating market right in the classroom. Therefore, the classroom atmosphere became very lively and joyful; students had the opportunity to show off their skillful skills in processing and decorating products.

Or Ms. Tran Thi Dung, Tay Thanh High School, in a lesson on the genre of descriptive writing in grade 11, combined with a STEM product report. Accordingly, she let her students create very "eye-catching" products that can be applied in reality such as dishes, very fancy handbags, very... "teen"...
