Dr. Benjamin Solomon Carson was born on September 18, 1951 in Detroit (Michigan, USA). He is an American neurosurgeon, author and politician. He is internationally recognized for his breakthroughs in neurosurgery and later served as the US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Dr. Carson was born into a poor family, his parents divorced when he was 8 years old. Carson's mother, Sonya, raised her two sons alone. Although she only had a third-grade education, Sonya was determined to provide for her children, doing many manual jobs to earn a living. During his early years at school, Carson struggled academically, often finishing at the bottom of his class and being bullied by his classmates. He had a bad temper and often got into fights with his classmates. Realizing that his son needed to change, Sonya limited his TV time and required him to read two books a week, writing a report on each one. As a result, Carson gradually expanded his knowledge and improved his academic performance significantly.

After graduating from high school with honors, Carson received a scholarship to Yale University and graduated in 1973. He then attended the University of Michigan Medical School.

With excellent hand-eye coordination and good spatial thinking, he quickly showed his talent in the field of neurosurgery. After earning his medical degree, he began his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At the age of 32, he became Director of the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery, one of the youngest physicians to hold the position.

Dr. Carson is known for his pioneering surgeries that have made a significant mark in the field of neurosurgery. In 1987, he led a team of 70 surgeons who successfully separated conjoined twins joined at the back of the head. The operation lasted about 22 hours and brought him global fame.

The American doctor also improved the method of hemispherectomy to control severe epilepsy in children. His improved techniques significantly reduced risks and improved treatment effectiveness. Throughout his career, he performed many complex surgeries, published more than 100 research papers, and contributed to the development of treatments for brain tumors and skull deformities.

Dr. Carson has shared his life story and medical experiences in several books. In his autobiography, Talented Hands, he recounts his journey from a troubled child to a leading surgeon. The book was adapted into a television series in 2009.

After retiring in 2013, Dr. Carson turned his attention to politics and public service. He gained national attention for his speeches and his 2016 campaign, highlighting important issues such as health care reform, education, and financial regulation.

In March 2017, he was appointed by President Donald Trump as the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. During his tenure, he focused on policies to develop affordable housing, reduce homelessness, and promote economic opportunity. Dr. Carson will serve in this position until January 2021.
