Waking up at 6am, Ninh Thi Thu Huong (born 2001, from Ninh Binh) quickly changed her clothes and quickly drove to the textile company near her house to get to work on time. Since her new appearance, Huong has been more confident when going out and loves life much more than before.

Born into a poor family, Huong was a pretty, healthy girl since childhood, but at the age of 3, a small tumor appeared behind her earlobe. At the age of 6, the jaw tumor grew larger, and the family was forced to choose surgery to remove it. The biopsy results of the sample confirmed that the tumor was benign.

The after-effects of the surgery left Huong’s face deformed, with a deep sunken area and a long scar. Her sunken face was always ridiculed and teased by her friends, who gave her the nicknames “crooked mouth” and “sunken face”. Once, during recess, Huong was beaten by her friends, leaving her arms and legs scratched. “My friends were jealous of the attention and favor they received from the teachers, so they came and beat me up,” Huong recalled.

After finishing high school, Huong decided to work as a garment worker to share the financial burden with her parents. Despite her physical appearance, Huong has a beautiful love with her military boyfriend - who is always there to encourage and share. Many times her boyfriend wanted to bring her home to meet his family, but because of her appearance, Huong did not dare to visit his family.

Thinking about the future, Huong began to learn about cosmetic surgery and wanted to have a normal face. At the same time, she learned about the free cosmetic surgery program in Hanoi. After many nights of thinking, the girl from Ninh Binh decided to apply and was fortunately selected by the organizers.

Dr. Richard Huy, Kangnam Cosmetic Hospital, commented: “This is a challenging case. Doctors will have to study how to move the skin flap from the top of the head down to the concave area, combining it with the skin flap from the buttocks to fill in the concave area. To make the face more balanced, doctors will continue to perform jaw surgery and bone grafting.”

Facing a complicated surgery, Huong suffered from severe anemia. Doctors had to plan nutrition and treatment so that the health of the girl born in 2001 met safety criteria throughout the surgery.

Huong underwent a total of 4 surgeries. The surgeries encountered many difficulties due to the deep concave jaw bone, but in the end, the journey to regain the shape of the 10X girl was successful, achieving good results.

After the surgery, she became more confident and smiled more. Looking at herself in the mirror, Huong smiled and said this was a miracle, opening a new chapter in her life. "I feel like a princess, more confident, no longer shy," the 10X said.

The day she returned home after 6 months away, Huong's family was surprised and did not recognize her. Only when she said hello did everyone run to hug her and burst into tears.

From her own transformation, the young girl wants to convey to everyone the message to be strong in fighting, speaking up, and strong in overcoming life's pain.

"None of us have the right to choose where we are born, but we have the right to choose how we live. Don't be pessimistic, don't stop dreaming," Huong shared.

Osteosarcoma of the jaw is a fairly common disease in the world and in Vietnam. Documents around the world show that the white population has about 10-15% of palatal osteomas. Studies on other Asian populations also show that the incidence of osteosarcoma of the jaw is quite high, from 40-60%.

The cause of jaw tumors is still unknown. Some risk factors that increase the rate of jaw tumors include local trauma, a diet lacking in vitamins and calcium, and long-term use of drugs containing phenytoin.

Maxillary or mandibular tumors are often asymptomatic and are only discovered incidentally during examination. Larger tumors can cause problems with fitting teeth or dentures, voice disorders, surface ulcers, difficulty eating, and fear of cancer. These symptoms are usually not dangerous but affect the patient's appearance, health, and psychology.

Limiting risk factors also helps prevent the disease. Adults should eat a balanced diet, supplement vitamin D and unsaturated fats in appropriate doses; supplement vitamins and calcium; avoid prolonged use of drugs containing phenytoin.
