Prefer extra classes over self-study, why?

I don't study by myself because I don't know where to start .

As the first group to take the high school graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program, Trang Trieu Hong Phuc, a 12th grade student at Huynh Man Dat High School for the Gifted (Kien Giang), determined that she had to self-study early to have enough knowledge, especially in the three subjects of math, physics, and English.

Students after extra classes. In the final grades, most students have to take extra classes to achieve the goal of passing exams.

"Every night, I spend 1 - 1.5 hours reading reference books for these subjects. For social subjects, I use ChatGPT to condense knowledge and synthesize real-life examples, helping to optimize self-study time," the male student shared.

Although he always spends time studying on his own, Phuc still studies the above three subjects in parallel, because he has not been able to determine which are the key types of exercises in the subject to achieve the best results. Meanwhile, the extra class provides him with documents and illustrative questions that are close to the requirements of the exam.

Nguyen Chanh Khiem, a 9/1 student at Kien Luong 1 Secondary School (Kien Giang), also combines self-study and extra classes with the goal of achieving the best score in the 10th grade entrance exam next year. "Every day, I spend 1 hour studying one of the subjects: math, physics and English," Khiem said. However, the male student also takes extra classes in 4 subjects: math, physics, chemistry and English, also with the reason of "deeply understanding the knowledge and types of questions", so that he can do better on the test. Khiem said that most students take extra classes to achieve the best results on the test.

D.TA, a high school student in Ho Chi Minh City, said one of the reasons she doesn't self-study is... not knowing where to start. "In class, teachers just tell me to study at home or open my book to review the lesson first without giving me specific instructions on what to do to prepare effectively. And whether I self-study or not, the teacher still teaches as usual when I come to class, making me feel that self-study is not that important," the female student confided.

TECHNOLOGY DEVICES, SOCIAL NETWORKS, EXAM METHODS

Currently teaching at secondary and high schools, Master Khuu Hoang Nhat Minh, Executive Director of Minh Khuu Academy (HCMC), commented that many students have not yet developed a high level of self-study, unless they really focus on studying or have parents to help them. One of the reasons, according to Mr. Minh, is that many students have poor concentration and forget quickly, due to the influence of technology devices and social networks.

"This greatly affects students' learning progress even when teachers closely monitor them, so self-study is poor. Another reason is that although the new program requires many sets of textbooks, students take the same exam to transfer to another level, causing students to not dare to seek new knowledge but only learn from experienced teachers," Master Minh explained.

Master Khuu Hoang Nhat Minh mentioned the concept of "washback effect", meaning that the exam questions will determine the teaching methods and content. Therefore, if the exam questions are still the same, changing the education program will also lead to the result that students must achieve high scores.

"Teachers still play a big role in students' learning journey, because if they study by themselves and get lost in the exam matrix, it will be a complete waste of time," Mr. Minh shared.

Create conditions for students to develop self-study skills by assigning them exercises, projects, and group activities that require self-study.

SOLUTIONS TO INCREASE SELF-STUDY

Faced with this reality, Master Minh suggested that teachers need to be systematically trained in constructivism, task-based and project-based instruction methods, and other types of support that teachers can provide to students, thereby encouraging self-study. "There are schools that open a large project to teach during the semester and invite experts to grade it, this is a very good way to help students self-study," said Mr. Minh.

Mr. Le Van Thuong, head of the Foreign Language Department at Kien Luong High School (Kien Giang), said that for the active group of students, teachers need to suggest the idea of self-study as well as introduce learning methods and reference sources. Meanwhile, for the passive group of students, they first need to consolidate their basic knowledge, then teachers can inspire them to learn more on their own.

The vice principal of a high school in District 3 (HCMC) affirmed that the self-study ability of many high school students has improved compared to before. Many students have a good sense of self-study, and know how to make use of their time to research different topics outside of official school hours. However, there are also some students who still rely heavily on teachers and are not really proactive in their studies, he said.

"Thanks to technology, students have found it easier to find documents and online courses for self-study. High schools in Ho Chi Minh City also try to create conditions for students to develop self-study skills by assigning them homework, projects, and group activities that require self-study. However, one risk is that students will be easily distracted by the dense amount of information online, affecting the quality of self-study," said the vice principal.

Faced with this reality, at the management level, he recommended that schools should promote the development of online learning platforms. Teachers also need to teach students how to search for information and select reliable sources, and guide them on how to use self-learning tools such as AI, according to the vice principal.
