Not yet 5G, already worried about 6G

6G network is the connection standard that follows the 5G network generation. Experts predict that when it is launched, it will create an explosion and bring a completely new type of internet, helping people get closer to the digital world and the virtual world. Currently, many countries such as the US, South Korea, China, Japan, Finland, etc. have researched and are ready to deploy 6G network technology. Vietnam is also preparing.

5G bottleneck lies with carriers

The Ministry of Information and Communications has identified 2024 as the year of 5G commercialization nationwide. To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Information and Communications has auctioned frequencies with two frequency bands B1 (2500-2600 MHz) and C2 (3700-3800 MHz) in March 2024... Network operators Viettel, VinaPhone (VNPT), MobiFone have participated in bidding for frequencies to deploy 5G technology after a long period of preparation and testing.

However, there are only more than 3 months left until the end of 2024, but network operators have not yet commercialized 5G. For example, Viettel has tested 5G broadcasting in 61 provinces and cities; in July 2023, it launched a 5G PNM mobile network for smart factories in Vietnam. But Viettel has not made any further moves when it comes to commercializing 5G. In mid-2024, MobiFone also announced the implementation of a plan to broadcast 1,000 new 5G stations, upgrading the core network to transmit and transmit, ready for 5G technology business. MobiFone has a plan to develop an ecosystem of digital solutions and services on the 5G platform, aiming for services with high data speeds... However, MobiFone's network currently only has 4G waves!

Similar to the above two networks, after successfully auctioning the right to use the frequency band 3700-3800 MHz (C2) in March 2024, VinaPhone proposed a 5G deployment plan, such as prioritizing the development of 5G network infrastructure towards improving user experience; focusing on deploying 5G in areas requiring high interaction, real-time network communication; in high-tech zones, urban areas, universities... But in reality, when 5G will be commercialized, there is no specific time yet.

Previously, the Prime Minister approved the Information and Communications Infrastructure Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 in Vietnam in Decision No. 36/QD-TTg dated January 11, 2024. The planning sets a target of a minimum average download speed of 100 Mbps for the 5G network by 2025. By 2030, the 5G network will cover 99% of the population, aiming to develop the next generation of advanced mobile networks. To realize these goals, 2024 is considered the ripe time to license the 5G commercialization band, and this has been done quickly by the Ministry of Information and Communications. The remaining task is that 5G commercialization is still "congested" on the network operators' side.

Preparing to worry about 6G

5G networks are not yet available, but worrying about 6G is inevitable. According to experts, each new generation of networks is usually deployed after 10 years, and 6G is expected to be commercially exploited in 2030. Some predictions hope that the 6G standard will be completed and put into commercial use as early as 2028, with mass commercialization taking place in 2030.

The Ministry of Information and Communications has established a 6G equipment development, evaluation, inspection, and testing group with 14 members. In addition to researching and reviewing the legal document system to promote equipment development; evaluating, inspecting, and testing; researching, reviewing, and proposing regulations on 6G equipment management... the group also studies typical international experiences on strategic orientations for 6G equipment development, evaluation, inspection, testing, and proposes implementation in Vietnam.

Previously, the Ministry of Information and Communications established a Steering Committee to promote research and development of 6G mobile information technology. This committee focuses on researching and proposing to competent authorities policies, strategies, mechanisms, and policies to create a legal environment, promote research and development of standards, applications, information security, production, and commercialization of 6G mobile information equipment and services in Vietnam.

Recently, at a meeting with units and network operators to discuss 6G research, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Duc Long said that currently there are 5 5G equipment manufacturers in the world, many world powers are joining hands to research 6G and Vietnam has set a goal to join the world in 6G, specifically to research, produce and deploy together. “Vietnam will research and contribute to the world's 6G standards. The Ministry of Information and Communications and enterprises will participate in research and promote the development of this technology. The State will invest in labs for enterprises to research and produce, because without labs it will be difficult to research 6G. In addition to domestic cooperation with experts, schools and research institutes on 6G, Vietnam will invite foreign experts to research 6G”, Deputy Minister Pham Duc Long emphasized.

According to experts, while 5G network speeds reach 20 Gbps, 6G networks aim for Tegabit (Tbps) speeds several hundred to several thousand times faster. In addition to ensuring connectivity with a large number of devices such as computers, sensors, all types of physical devices, 6G networks also ensure the integration of four important components: data, people, processes and physical devices into a unified entity.
