On June 24, Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee Nguyen Van Hieu and the city's working delegation surveyed ports, wharves, and stops serving inland waterway public passenger transport routes combined with economic development and riverside urban areas in Can Tho City.
Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee Nguyen Van Hieu surveyed the Hau River (Khai Luong and Con Khuong canals), Binh Thuy River, and Can Tho River. These rivers have ports, wharves, and stops serving inland waterway public passenger transport routes that will be invested in and built in the near future, to serve the economic and urban development along the river of the city.
Through the survey, Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee Nguyen Van Hieu suggested that the Department of Transport (DOT) have a plan to advise the City People's Committee to convert the functions of some ports and wharves that are at risk of traffic conflicts with future roads, to mainly serve tourism. At the same time, exploit the surrounding commercial service land fund, combined with marinas to serve the high-end customer segment.
Secretary Nguyen Van Hieu said that for the routes planned for river bus development, it is necessary to focus on serving both transportation and tourism to exploit the river routes to achieve high economic efficiency and avoid waste. In particular, tourism is the long-term economic development orientation of the city, while transportation is the means to serve the travel needs of people and tourists.
According to the Department of Transport of Can Tho City, the Department has proposed a plan to study and develop three waterway bus routes on the Hau River and Can Tho River.
In particular, waterway bus route No. 1 follows the Hau River, the route length is about 38km, passing through the districts of Ninh Kieu, Binh Thuy, O Mon, Thot Not. The starting point is at Can Tho International Passenger Port in the area in front of Hau River Park, Ninh Kieu District and the ending point is in the central area of Thot Not District.
Waterway bus route No. 2 follows the Can Tho River, about 21km long, through Ninh Kieu, Cai Rang and Phong Dien districts. The starting point is at Can Tho International Passenger Port in the area in front of Hau River Park, Ninh Kieu District and the end point is in the central area of Phong Dien District.
Waterway bus route No. 3 follows the Hau River, about 7.5km long, through Ninh Kieu and Cai Rang districts. The starting point is at Can Tho International Passenger Port in the area in front of Hau River Park, Ninh Kieu District and the ending point is at the Passenger Port in Urban Area 586, Cai Rang District.
Currently, the Department of Transport is proposing to the City People's Committee to approve this agency to hire a consultant to develop a project to develop inland waterway public passenger transport in the city, thereby serving as a basis for implementing investment and construction using budget capital and inviting investors to participate in investing in the construction of these waterway bus routes.
