Prime Minister's direction on Vietnamese sports
On March 18, at the Conference to review the work in 2024 and deploy key tasks in 2025 of the culture, sports and tourism sector chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Government leaders listened to the report summarizing the activities of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024 and the orientations and plans set out for 2025.
In particular, sports continue to be one of the key development goals. According to the report of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in 2024, high-performance sports: 16 athletes won tickets to the Olympics in Paris. Although they did not win medals, the athletes and coaches tried their best to compete, the performance parameters of most athletes improved such as rowing, shooting, archery, cycling...
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh
In 2024, Vietnamese sports won a total of 1,214 international medals (including 482 gold medals, 360 silver medals, 372 bronze medals). Notably, for the first time, the women's futsal team won the Southeast Asian championship; 16 athletes won tickets to the Paris Olympics; in which athlete Trinh Thu Vinh successfully completed her mission with 2 finals in 2 events: 10m air pistol and 25m sports pistol (in which Trinh Thu Vinh ranked 4th in the Olympics in the 10m air pistol event); the women's volleyball team won the world bronze medal for the first time and the Asian Volleyball Cup gold medal for the second time and many other outstanding achievements.
Directing at the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that although the sports sector has made progress, there are still things to ponder, including the fact that Vietnamese sports did not win medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the culture, sports and tourism sectors are a flexible bridge between the past and the present. Culture is the internal strength of the nation, sports is the health of the Vietnamese people, and tourism is the promotion and inspiration of the country and people of Vietnam to international friends.
Therefore, developing culture, sports and tourism requires close links, as well as specific policies to mobilize resources and the intelligence of Vietnamese people.
Trinh Thu Vinh entered the top 4 of the Paris Olympics in the women's 10m air pistol event.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also directed: mass sports development needs to be broad, while high-performance sports development needs to be deep. This is the orientation that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will take into account when drafting a plan for 2025, focusing on the 33rd SEA Games taking place at the end of next year in Thailand.
Limitations of Vietnamese sports
Reporting to the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism affirmed that high-performance sports have made progress, gradually asserting their position in the region and approaching the level of sports in the continent and the world. However, the development of high-performance sports in Vietnam compared to other countries in the continent and the world is facing great challenges that require innovation in thinking and methods.
At the Paris Olympics, although the performance parameters of most athletes improved, the results showed that the selection and training of key athletes to compete for medals at the world level did not meet the requirements, and the achievements of Vietnamese athletes were still relatively far behind those of the continent and the world.
In addition, the management of athlete training is not strict, there are still some loopholes that need to be fixed, causing bad public opinion, affecting the reputation and image of Vietnamese sports.
In 2025, Vietnamese sports need a reasonable strategy to achieve good results at the SEA Games, while taking advantage of the SEA Games as a springboard to invest in the ASIAD and the Olympics, which are the sports arenas in which Vietnam needs to make a stronger impression, avoiding the situation of focusing on the region, without investing in key areas that are good enough for athletes to reach out to Asia and the world.
