The Vietnam Maritime Administration has just submitted to the Ministry of Construction a detailed plan for the development of land and seaport areas in Quang Nam for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

Container cargo grows rapidly

According to statistics from the Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration, in 2024, the volume of goods passing through Quang Nam seaport will reach 4.07 million tons, of which containers will reach 0.94 million tons (0.18 million TEUs).

The average growth rate of goods in the period 2020-2024 reached 19.9%. The number of ships passing through Quang Nam seaport increased by 5.7%.

By 2030, Quang Nam seaport is planned to have 6 ports, including 10 wharves with a total length of 2,283m (Illustration photo).

Up to now, Quang Nam seaport has 6 wharves with a total length of about 1,270m. Of which, Tam Hiep wharf area has 3 general, bulk, container, liquid/gas wharves of Chu Lai port with a length of 836m, receiving ships with a capacity of up to 20,000 tons.

Ky Ha wharf area has 3 wharves with a total length of 434m, of which 2 general wharves are 374m long, receiving ships with a capacity of up to 6,600 tons; 1 liquid/gas cargo wharf is 60m long, receiving ships with a capacity of up to 5,000 tons, has temporarily stopped operating.

In the waters of Quang Nam seaport, there are also 2 anchorage areas waiting for bridges, waiting for channels combined with storm shelters. At the same time, there is a pilot pick-up and drop-off area at the beginning of Ky Ha - Quang Nam channel with a radius of 0.5 nautical miles.

Quang Nam seaport connects with provinces in the region via the Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressway and many national highways as well as the Ho Chi Minh road system and the Eastern Truong Son road.

Along with that, there are 4 national inland waterways connecting to seaports, including Thu Bon River, Truong Giang River, Vinh Dien River, Hoi An - Cu Lao Cham.

Notably, Quang Nam province currently does not have a dry port or large logistics centers. The main areas for goods gathering are the cargo yards at the upgraded ports (Tam Hiep port) and industrial parks and clusters in the province (Tam Thanh and Tam Hiep industrial parks...).

Investment orientation for Cua Lo route from non-budgetary capital sources

According to the report sent to the Ministry of Construction, the Vietnam Maritime and Inland Waterways Administration clearly stated that by 2030, the cargo volume through Quang Nam seaport will reach from 8.5 - 10.3 million tons (of which container cargo will be from 0.6 - 0.8 million TEU).

Passenger volume through the port reached from 34 - 54 thousand passengers (Hoi An - Cu Lao Cham route).

Regarding infrastructure, there will be 6 ports, including 10 wharves with a total length of 2,283m.

Vision to 2050, cargo throughput through the port with an average growth rate of about 4.5 - 5.5%/year. Passenger throughput with an average growth rate of about 1.7 - 1.8%/year.

In this phase, the investment in Tam Hiep and Tam Hoa wharf areas will be completed to serve the Chu Lai open economic zone and other industries. The function of Ky Ha and Tam Giang wharf areas will be gradually converted into wharf areas serving the Blue Whale gas-electricity project chain.

According to the plan, the total land use demand by 2030 is about 120 hectares (not including areas for developing industrial parks, logistics, etc. associated with the port).

By 2030, the investment capital demand for the Quang Nam seaport system will be about VND 5,236 billion, including investment capital for public maritime infrastructure of about VND 3,612 billion and investment capital demand for ports of about VND 1,624 billion (including only ports providing cargo handling services).

This phase also identifies a number of priority projects. Specifically, investment will be made in storm shelters, coastal information stations, maritime traffic monitoring and coordination systems (VTS); construction of public service ports, and facilities serving specialized state management tasks.

At the same time, invest in Cua Lo channel for ships up to 50,000 tons (including dike system, navigational signals, pilot pick-up and drop-off area...) from non-budgetary sources.

With seaports, investing in ports in Tam Hiep and Tam Hoa wharf areas to serve Chu Lai open economic zone for ships up to 50,000 tons.
