The above information was given within the framework of the 2023 Annual National Dermatology Conference and the First Vietnam Dermatology Research Conference taking place from November 23-25, 2023. The conference was organized by the Central Dermatology Hospital, Lam Dong Department of Health and Lam Dong Provincial Center for Disease Control, attracting more than 1,500 delegates to participate, update and share professional knowledge, practical experience and new applications in the field of cosmetic dermatology.

At the conference, Dr. Bach Thi Chinh, Medical Director, VNVC Vaccination Center System, had a remarkable scientific report "Vaccines to prevent dermatological diseases - Effectiveness beyond basic value" mentioning measures to prevent infectious diseases manifested on the skin that can cause complications and death such as chickenpox, shingles, measles, rubella, HPV with simple, effective, economical and easy-to-implement vaccines.

Dr. Chinh said that, except for smallpox, which killed at least half a billion people and was eradicated in 1980, the world still has many epidemics causing millions of cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths each year due to measles, rubella, chickenpox, shingles, and HPV. Meanwhile, these diseases have effective vaccines, but many people still do not know or have not been fully vaccinated.

Typically, genital warts caused by HPV not only affect aesthetics but also affect the psychology, happiness of couples and quality of life of the patient. Statistics show that 1 in 8 women have genital warts at least once before the age of 50. The disease is difficult to treat completely and is prone to recurrence. Treatment methods such as applying medicine, wart surgery, burning warts... can cause pain and leave side effects. HPV is also the cause of millions of dangerous cancers such as cervical, vulvar, penile, pharyngeal, anal... each year.

Despite the high annual burden, the HPV vaccine can now prevent up to 94% of the high-risk HPV strains that cause the above diseases. The vaccine is best used for men and women aged 9-26, regardless of sexual activity. People who have had genital warts still need to get vaccinated to prevent the risk of reinfection.

Chickenpox, in addition to the manifestation of blisters on the skin, if not monitored and treated properly, the patient may experience complications such as skin infections, sepsis, pneumonia, acute nephritis... Infected, pus-filled chickenpox blisters can easily change skin pigmentation, leaving permanent, difficult-to-recover scars.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), before the vaccine was available, each year the world had about 140 million cases, 4.2 million complications and 4,200 deaths from chickenpox.

Not only that, after recovering from chickenpox, the virus that causes the disease, Varicella Zoster, remains "hibernating" in the nerve ganglia and reactivates when encountering favorable conditions such as old age, stress, weakened immune system... causing shingles.

Symptoms of shingles are rashes and blisters that cluster together. When the blisters burst, they form ulcers and ooze fluid. If not properly cared for, they can easily cause shingles to become infected, leaving dark spots, ugly scars, and causing complications of shingles.

In particular, shingles can cause a skin rash or a latent form without a rash. In its latent form, the virus can cause vasculitis, increasing the risk of stroke, transient ischemic attack, myocardial infarction, etc.

According to statistics in the US, about 99.5% of people aged 50 and over who have been infected with the Varicella Zoster virus are at risk of developing shingles. For every 3 people with shingles, 1 person is at risk of developing long-term post-herpetic neuralgia.

Dr. Chinh said that the chickenpox vaccine is a measure to prevent both chickenpox and shingles. The chickenpox vaccine reduces the risk of getting the disease by up to 98%, prevents skin damage, dangerous complications and produces good antibodies after 2-3 weeks of vaccination.

Besides HPV, chickenpox, shingles, measles and rubella can cause rashes, skin rashes and serious complications. Measles causes otitis media, pneumonia, diarrhea, encephalitis... Pregnant women with rubella can have miscarriages, stillbirths, congenital rubella syndrome... Single measles vaccine or two doses of combined measles-mumps-rubella vaccine are up to 97% effective in preventing the risk of disease, red rash symptoms and severe complications, death.

According to the Ministry of Health, environmental pollution, climate change, natural disasters, storms and floods create favorable conditions for infectious diseases to develop complicatedly in the coming time. People with weakened immune systems such as the elderly, people with underlying medical conditions, pregnant women, children, etc. are very susceptible to diseases and dangerous complications.

“In unfavorable climate and environmental conditions and with high transmission of infectious diseases, vaccines are an effective measure to prevent diseases and complications, saving treatment costs and medical personnel to care for patients,” Dr. Chinh emphasized.
