In 2021, during construction at the Kim Ha Thien Phu project site in the Mianyang Economic Development Zone, Sichuan Province, China, workers accidentally discovered a giant tree 10 meters underground. This incident attracted the attention of experts and authorities because of its unique value.

At around 9:00 p.m. on August 31, 2021, while workers were digging the foundations for buildings 4 and 5 of the project, the excavator detected an unusual sign when it went down about 10 meters. The excavator owner immediately reported the incident to his superiors. The project management team quickly sent people to the scene to check and discovered a giant tree.

The excavated tree was about 1.5 meters in diameter and nearly 40 meters long. It took workers about three days to clear the surrounding area and extract the tree. According to information from workers at the site, the tree was found in a relatively complete state, indicating good preservation underground.

According to the project manager, after discovering the strange tree at the construction site, the company immediately cordoned off the area and reported it to the Mianyang Economic Development Zone Management Committee and the local police who came to the scene to inspect. In order not to affect the construction, with the consent of the Mianyang Economic Development Zone Management Committee, the project owner used a large number of machines to transport the trees to a temporary warehouse.

On September 17, 2021, experts from the Mianyang City Museum and the Mianyang Kistler Root Carving Association were also invited to appraise and evaluate the found tree. Experts confirmed that this is a precious basswood, known as "Eastern Divine Wood", which is very rare in China. The excavated tree is between 3,000 and 10,000 years old, and its estimated value is not less than 100 million yuan (more than 349 billion VND), even priceless. After learning about the origin of the precious tree, the owner of the Jinhe Tianfu project decided to hand it over to the government.

According to Ifeng, this is not the first time a basswood tree has appeared in China. Previously in 2016, another basswood log was also discovered in the river section of Tu Li village in Peng Zhai town, Heyuan city, Guangdong, China. Local officials also said that due to the influence of Typhoon Haima, this area experienced heavy rain for many days, causing the water flow in the Lijiang river to rise and rush in, bringing a lot of waste to the river section of Tu Li village.

After the storm passed, the section of the river where the bass log appeared was blocked off by the police. After inspection, the police said that the total length of the log was 3.5 meters, and the diameter was about 70 centimeters.

What is basswood that is so valuable?

Basswood, also known as ancient agarwood, is a rare wood formed from ancient trees that have been buried underground for thousands of years. The carbonization process and lack of oxygen underground have created a special texture for this type of wood. Basswood can have many different colors such as brown, gray, black, and blue-black, and after a long time, it will become a dark black like coal.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, agarwood was a precious item favored in royal palaces and was often used to make coffins for emperors. The value of this wood cannot be measured because it is extremely limited in quantity and finding it depends largely on luck.

With the discovery of this precious wood, the owner of Kim Ha Thien Phu project decided to hand it over to the local government to ensure its conservation and proper exploitation. This story not only highlights the value of agarwood but also emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural treasures that people are lucky enough to discover.
