A day after warning of shutting down social media platform X if it did not comply with court orders, on August 29 (local time), the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the freezing of bank accounts of the Starlink satellite internet service in the country. Starlink is a subsidiary of the space company SpaceX owned by American billionaire Elon Musk.
The confrontation stems from the fact that the X platform has not complied with court orders to block several accounts accused of spreading false information and inciting hatred. The Supreme Court has threatened to suspend the X social network's operations in the country if billionaire Musk does not appoint legal representatives for X in Brazil within 24 hours. The deadline to do so is 8 p.m. on August 29, local time (6 a.m. on August 30, Vietnam time).
Starlink in Brazil criticized the order as "based on an unfounded decision" and said it would use legal measures to deal with the freeze.
Observers say the court's decision will have serious consequences for both Starlink and X. The freezing of Starlink's bank accounts will greatly affect the company's business in Brazil, especially in the field of providing satellite Internet services in the Amazon region.
Starlink has about 5,000 satellites in low orbit, more than any other company's network. More than 50 countries have adopted Starlink because of its superfast internet speeds delivered not by fiber optic cables but by a dense network of satellites.
