Vu Trung Kien's "Linh Sac" collection won the only 10 points in his graduation project majoring in Fashion Design, Hanoi Open University.

The collection consists of four pieces, presented at the graduation fashion show "Street of Star Fashion Show 2023" in early May.

"I put a lot of heart and soul into creating Linh Sac . This collection strongly conveys the message I want to send to fashionistas about preserving the beauty and cultural values of the nation," Kien, 23, from Hai Phong, shared.

Kien's idea for "Linh Sac" comes from the image of the four sacred animals of the Nguyen Dynasty, the Dragon - Unicorn - Turtle - Phoenix. Having created many collections during his 5 years of studying fashion design, Kien wanted his graduation collection to be perfect.

After spending a week researching documents on the Internet and in the library, asking teachers or anyone who knew about the four sacred animals, Kien still felt it was not enough. The student decided to go to Hue, where many relics and stories about the four sacred animals of the Nguyen Dynasty were kept, to learn more.

After 5 days in Hue, Kien returned to Hanoi and pieced together his research journey. From just thinking about the four sacred animals, Kien learned more about Hue ceramic mosaic art to incorporate into his works.

Kien submitted nearly 100 sketches, then selected 16 final designs and kept four for the real model. With only two months left, Kien had to do every step from choosing the fabric, creating the shape, processing the fabric surface, and attaching the details.

"3D attachment is a time-consuming process. It took me a week to research how to attach and choose the beads," Kien said.

At the same time, Kien comes up with photo shoot ideas, contacts models, photo crews and moodboards (a board that presents ideas or works, reference images to serve the design process).

Three days before the graduation show, Kien found that the costume inspired by "Quy" did not capture the spirit of the turtle image. The student and his colleagues recreated a new costume within 48 hours. This costume had many 3D embellishments and weaving techniques, and had to be completely handmade, creating a lot of pressure for the 23-year-old man.

Ms. Vo Thi Ngoc Anh, Kien's graduation advisor, highly appreciated his student's serious attitude towards studying and working. Observing Kien while doing his graduation project, Ms. Ngoc Anh realized that the male student had strong opinions and personality. Kien had the qualities that a good designer needs: meticulousness and perfectionism.

"Even though there were times when I approved the project, if there was just one detail that I didn't like, Kien would still redraw it, redo it, and send it back to me for approval until he was satisfied," said Ms. Ngoc Anh, giving Kien's graduation project a score of 10 as well-deserved.

Kien also admits to being a perfectionist. As with his graduation project, if he made four costumes inspired by one of the four sacred animals, Kien would have reduced his research time. But because he wanted all four sacred animals to exist, he accepted that he had to do some research to make the collection unified.

"With one graduation project, my research time can be equal to four other projects. It's more difficult, but I'm satisfied because I can bring more national beauty into my works," Kien shared.

The male student said that researching and coming up with ideas for a new collection is always the most difficult stage because he has to select and compare with the works of previous designers, avoid duplication and create differences.

During his university years, Kien worked for free at many fashion companies to learn the job, while working on many collections. In 2018, he reached the semi-finals of the national scientific research competition with the topic "Bringing recycled fashion into life", and reached the finals of the Vietnam Fashion Designer program in 2020. Many of Kien's designs appeared in shows domestically or in Thailand, Korea, and England.

Earlier this year, the Hai Phong man used his savings after three years of studying and working to organize a show called "Touch". Kien convinced Miss Huong Giang to be the vedette, was contacted by brands to collaborate, and released many products to the market. The name Kien Vu - Kien's stage name, also became more widely known.

Having loved fashion since he was a child, seeing his mother - a skilled seamstress - create beautiful clothes for his neighbors every day, Kien is happy because he now makes his mother proud.

"From the first solo show to the 10 points of my project, I did not disappoint my mother by believing in me and trying to let me study design properly," Kien said, adding that this made all the hardships disappear and gave me more motivation to pursue the career.

Kien's future direction is still to create collections imbued with national cultural values, focusing on the intersection between traditional culture and modern trends.

As for the "Linh Sac" collection, Kien wants to be known by many people instead of just stopping at the graduation show. The male student plans to send the collection to some famous artists and exhibitions.

"I want to spread national values and spirit to many people," Kien said.
