What is the priority road?

Priority roads are roads where vehicles participating in traffic are given the right of way by other vehicles coming from other directions at intersections and these roads are often marked with priority road signs to make it clear to traffic participants.

According to Article 5 of QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT issued with Circular 54/2019/TT-BGTVT effective from July 1, 2020, the priority road order but priority road signs have not been used yet, including: Expressway - National highway - Urban road - Provincial road - District road - Commune road - Specialized road.

When two roads are of the same order and intersect at the same level, the determination of which road is the priority road is regulated as follows: The road specified by the competent authority will be the priority road; The road with a high technical level will be the priority road; When the roads have different traffic volumes, the road with the larger average traffic volume during the day and night will be the priority road.

In order of priority but without using priority road signs, the highway is the number one priority road.

If the average daily and nightly traffic volumes are equal, the road with more large public transport vehicles will have priority. The road with the higher pavement grade will have priority.

Priority road sign W.207

W.207 (a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, k, l) is a priority road sign meaning “Intersection with non-priority road” and is placed in front of intersections outside the inner city and urban areas. Inner city and urban areas can use appropriate signs depending on actual conditions.

Vehicles on roads with this priority sign have priority when passing through intersections. However, they must give way to vehicles with priority according to regulations.

Priority air traffic sign W.208

W.208 is a non-priority road sign when “intersecting with a priority road”. When you see the W.208 non-priority road sign, it means you are traveling on a non-priority road. The purpose of the sign is to warn you about approaching a road section that intersects with a priority road.

When driving on a road with sign W.208, you must give way to vehicles on the remaining road. Below the non-priority road sign W.208 is sign S.506b “priority road direction” when the road intersects with a priority road to change direction or turn. The remaining priority road will have a sign intersecting with a priority road, signaling to drivers of vehicles participating in traffic.

If on the road there is a non-priority road sign W.208 in a densely populated area, the sign is placed at the intersection with the priority road. In addition, outside of densely populated areas, depending on the location of the sign, the S.502 sign can be placed to indicate the "distance to the signal object".

Sign I.401 – Beginning of Priority Road

Sign I.401 is the sign that marks the beginning of a priority road, giving priority to vehicles with sign I.401 going first.

Priority road signs are placed in appropriate locations before branch roads are about to merge into main roads. Vehicles coming from branch roads to main roads are required to stop, observe and yield to vehicles on the main road with priority.

Sign I.402 – End of priority road. This is the sign indicating the end of a priority road, signaling to drivers that the priority road has ended.

Sign I.401 is the sign that marks the beginning of a priority road.

Sign S.506a is placed below the priority road start sign I.401 on the priority road. The purpose is to guide drivers of vehicles participating in traffic to know the directions of the priority road at the intersection.

Sign S.506b is placed below non-priority road sign W.208 and sign R.122 on non-priority roads. The purpose is to guide drivers to recognize the direction of the priority road at the intersection.

Priority road signs with sub-signs

A sign that specifically regulates which vehicles are given priority according to the meaning of the sign, or which vehicles are excluded from priority when participating in traffic to a road section with a priority road sign with an additional sign attached.
