"Night blindness" with speed limit signs: Actions of authorities

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí15/02/2025

(Dan Tri) - After Dan Tri newspaper published an article "Drivers are blinded by speed limit signs during 4 time frames on the national highway", Road Management Area III has installed 2 additional 70km/h speed limit signs.

On February 14, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Director of Road Management Area III (under the Vietnam Road Administration, Ministry of Transport), said that the unit has directed relevant departments to install 2 additional 70km/h speed limit signs on National Highway 1, Vinh Luong Commune, Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province.

According to Dan Tri reporters, the 70km/h speed limit signs are placed in both directions along National Highway 1, about 150m away from the 50km/h speed limit signs during 4 specific time frames that Dan Tri newspaper reported.

Ms. Lan, a local resident, said that at around 8:00 a.m. on February 14, a group of workers brought iron pillars, shovels, cement, etc. to erect a 70km/h speed limit sign near her house.

"There was no such sign before, they just put it up this morning. The cement spill is still fresh," said Ms. Lan.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh admitted that, through the reflection of Dan Tri newspaper, the unit found inadequacies so it accepted and organized the installation of additional signs.

According to the Director of Road Management Area III, regarding the content of the speed limit sign of 50km/h in 4 certain time frames, the unit will continue to research and discuss with the locality to find a better solution.

As Dan Tri reported, recently on National Highway 1, Khanh Hoa province section has many signs limiting speed to 50km/h during 4 certain time frames such as 6:30-7:30, 10:30-11:30, 12:30-13:30 and 16:30-17:30.

Driver Tien Nhan, residing in Ho Chi Minh City, said that, with the above-mentioned speed limit signs, cars are usually allowed to move at 90km/h, without signs limiting the speed to 70km/h, so in a split second, drivers cannot read the specific information on the sign about the time limit to follow the instructions.

Mr. Nhan suggested that if this is an area that requires a speed limit to ensure the safety of students and vehicles passing through the median strip opening, the limit should be fixed at 50km/h, without the need to add time frame information in the additional sign.

According to driver Nhan, if the current sign is kept, it should be hung high, at eye level, with clear numbers so that drivers can easily see it instead of being placed along both sides of the road as it is now.

The leader of the Department of Transport of Khanh Hoa province also admitted that having too much data on one sign will make it difficult for drivers to receive all the information to implement, so this unit will record readers' opinions and find solutions.
